One of my players wanted to take the Auran language (one of the languages shown in the Elemental Evil Players Companion) but was unable to take it as one of the languages liseted in the drop down menu. (They had chosen the courtier background)
EDITED: Player got their languages mixed up origionally was primordial they thought they could not get. TUrns out they got that as a race option but now want auran.
I just created a character with the courtier background and was able to select the Primordial language as either of the two language slots the background grants.
Is it possible that the player selected the Primordial language at some other point during character creation (it won't show on the list if the character already has it)?
Yeah my player got the languages mixed up they thought they got auran as a race option and not primordial. However now I have the inverse issue with them not able to get auran. They loved the elemental evil guide so wanted all the air based languages.

Auran is a dialect of primordial. All dialects can be understood by the other ones. So just adding primordial grants you knowledge of being able to understand Auran, Aquan, Ignan and Terran. You can choose whichever dialect you want to speak for flavor, and any other primordial speaker can understand you. This is explained in the Languages section of chapter 4 of the PHB, right under the Dwarven alphabet table.
Some of these languages are actually families of languages with many dialects. For example, the Primordial language includes the Auran, Aquan, Ignan, and Terran dialects, one for each of the four elemental planes. Creatures that speak different dialects of the same language can communicate with one another.
Looks like it is indeed Primordial that your player needs. :)

Hi there,
I just created a character with the courtier background and was able to select the Primordial language as either of the two language slots the background grants.
Is it possible that the player selected the Primordial language at some other point during character creation (it won't show on the list if the character already has it)?
