Site if very flaky right now. Every other time I select a spell during character creation I get the:

I have a scheduled game coming up and I hope the site is reliable before this weekend otherwise I'm going to start wanting refunds for my subscriptions.
I already have the sourcebooks at home, if I have to print out sheets because the website is expected to go down how is the website of any benefit to me?
What seems odd is that there hasn't been any problems like this over the past year, but now all of a sudden this site is sporadic at best. Yet they want us to believe that it's something the users are doing on our end because they have no clue what the problem is. I have yet to see any post on this site or twitter or Facebook that gives an explanation as to what's going on and what caused this chaos. All we get is "We're doing our best", and some clown telling me that "They are just trying to figure out the problem and fix it for you. And I do mean for you, because only a few people are still having issues, not the whole site." Obviously, there are still plenty of people having issues with this site, and I do mean plenty, and I highly doubt it's because of something these users did.
And just for the record, I love this site, which is why it's so frustrating to see these issues take hold of one of the best things that has happened for D&D players.
Badeye (Adam Bradford, who is in charge of DDB) gave a review of what happened in yesterday's developers update. Here's what I remember/understood from that explanation; I'm not a developer, so I may not have all the terms precisely right:
the cpu of their web nodes went over capacity
they increased cpu/web nodes capacity
their metrics/analytics were telling them that there was still cpu capacity after that change, but things were still dreadfully slow
they spent time trying sort track down other possibilities; as they learned later, they were chasing red herrings
they increased database capacity as their next step, but this broke several services
they worked on fixing those services
they then discovered that their metrics/analytics were feeding them inaccurate data about cpu capacity
this lead to the discovery that the steps they took to increase cpu capacity had not actually brought more capactiy/web nodes online.
fixes were made to the increases in cpu/web node capacity and the site began to stabilize.
Adam was very clear that this was an explanation, not an excuse. He also shared that user volume over this past weekend was double the previous record for # of simultaneous users. Again, this was by way of explanation, not excuse.
I read the questions about VPN very differently than you do: Like DxJxC, I understand them to be attempts to figure out what exactly is going wrong so that it can be fixed. Since things have been fixed, there have been numerous reports of folks having issues, and a common thread in several of those reports is the use of NordVPN. This does not mean that these problems are the fault of the users; it may not even be the fault of NordVPN; but something isn't interacting right between DDB and NordVPN; the question is, is it just that particular VPN or is it others? The only way to know is to ask users who are having trouble if they are using an VPN and if turning it off improves things.

How does one sign up for the developer updates?
I'm surprised CPU would be the culprit, considering the website is kinda just CRUD operations?
Hover over Media in the navigation menu and click Dev Updates.

Could you be more specific? You mean on character sheets? Variant human, ASI, or manage feats? Did you buy any feats? There are only 2 (3 technically) free feats and they have a prerequisite.
Sorry I picked the Variant human got to the feat section and the drop box shows nothing in it.
Have you purchased any feats or the PHB here? There are only 2 free official feats (plus the Firearm Specialist from Critical Role); both of the official feats have prerequisites your character likely doesn’t meet, and if you have Critical Role content turned off, you wont see Firearm Specialist.
Saw quite a few people posting about Nord VPN having to do with the issue. I use Nord and, indeed, the problems with with creating and/or viewing characters stop when i turn off the VPN.
I'm trying to buy $75 worth of content but I keep getting an error when I try to check out. Please fix!! My campaign is almost done and I need more adventures before we get there!! My personal ones suck!!

How does one sign up for the developer updates?
I'm surprised CPU would be the culprit, considering the website is kinda just CRUD operations?
Most Thursdays, Adam does an hour long developer update on D&D Beyond's twitch channel at 9am Pacific.
Another user here (I'm forgetting who at the moment) keeps up a text synopsis of info from the updates.

Unable to view my characters
Are you using a VPN? If so, which one? What happens if you turn it off?

I can confirm this. I use NordVPN and turned it off after reading this, and it worked.
The error code I got was 8fe57a6bff204ce0bde845980403d608
