I noticed that after clicking cast on Mage Armor that my characters AC remained as base plus dex instead of changing to 13 plus dex.
Is this an error or does the spell not affect AC on the sheet since it has a limited duration?
The character builder doesn't track the effects of spells upon your character (at this point - it may do in the future, but that's one for the staff to answer).
Casting Mage Armor doesn't change the AC of the character who casts it. I realize the spell allows you to choose a target, but I wish there was a way to specify that you targeted yourself and have your AC automatically update.
I think, right now, the spells are not supposed to change anything in your character sheet, aside the tracking of spell slots.
It's really frustrating how unclear all of this is. Some things actually effect your character, other things don't. Short rest resets some things, but not everything. Honestly right now, it's extremely hard to use the character sheet in-game because everything has be second guessed and double-checked; might as well just do it by hand.
If the team hasn't seen or looked into dicecloud.com, it would do well to look at how they do things, especially in terms of the flexibility that is offered for custom, homebrew content. Hopefully this is stuff that is planned to be addressed in the short term.
The magic item homebrew system seems to be the most robust in terms of adding to or changing the character sheet. I've made private homebrew for my players. Mage Armor is a Common magical item that adds 3 to base AC (you can't set it as armour because that inherently comes with other restrictions so it has to be made as a bonus). That way the players can essentially equip it from inventory.
I've done the same with the Bladesong ability. I tried with Haste as well but there's currently no way to double speed it seems. Not even boots of speed do it.
The character sheet doesn't all auto update with spell effects - D&D Beyond isn't a computer game, it's a digital toolset to help reference and play. If the AC did auto update, how would it know when the 8 hours is up?
If you want the AC to update, the current work around we've seen a few users do is to create a homebrew item that they call Mage Armor (ensure you don't submit it for public listing), and they equip/unequip it when they cast the spell or the spell wears off.
Hey, Ive been looking through your threads and I havent been able to find anything about it. Casting Mage Armor doesn't change the AC on the digital character sheet? Just wanted to give you all a heads up on some bugs!
Yeah, this was one of the first things I noticed way back. I think a "fix" is coming for stuff like this. At a minimum allow us to manually edit the AC field.

Also, Robe of the Archmagi is not increasing the AC of my character to 15 + Dex bonus.
Interested in how to handle mage armor as well. There does not appear to be a way to even make a manual adjustment.

You currently can not.
is this something we will see some day?

Wary the wizard who focuses on homebrew, for he can create nightmares that you wouldn't even dream of
AC should just be user editable.
