Ever since I first posted a comment on this thread a couple years ago, the notifications just serve to validate that I'm not alone in this wish. But ultimately, I do sympathize with the developers who are likely much more motivated to integrate new features that are bundled with purchasable content.
This "blank class" shell sounds really interesting. Like you mentioned, @TauraOhtar, it's more about NOT having the baked in mechanics of a class than anything else. A clever homebrewer has plenty of tools to get crafty with giving unique abilities out, but excluding base class features where it just makes most players resort to PDFs. Great recommendation, mate!
I hate so much this never amounted to anything. been wanting to import my homebrew magus so bad for player convince.
Find a base class with the same HD, and choose whatever casting class has spells per day like you want. Create a subclass with abilities that add the spells you want. You can have them cast using spell slots or not, at will, or a number of times per day of your choice. It'll take some messing around, but you can do it. Just ignore the rest of the abilities from your chosen class and work with your player. It isn't ideal, but you can make it work well enough to have the convenient quick reference during your games. It's a lot of work, but I did it with a full Ranger class that worked really well.
I’m having trouble getting it to do that for a Wizard-based Necromancer that has a wider spell availability, even though I had specified all the spells and “available at level 1”, the player in my campaign who multiclassed into it and only has one level in it can’t see the cantrips and first-level spells because it doesn’t even give me the option to select a subclass until 3, despite telling it lv1 was the only prereq.

I'm late to this discussion. I like this site, I enjoy all the features, but it seems strange to me that you can homebrew just about anything except for classes. I'm not a programmer, I am comfortable admitting that technical limitations are well beyond the scope of my understanding, but I get the impression this has to be possible. Even if all it amounted to was the ability to change the default stat requirements and proficiencies of copies of the existing classes, coupling that with a homebrewed subclass would make it possible to build just about anything.
Although this is an older topic, its still an issue and I'm pretty upset about it. This game just doesn't have enough player options for long term players which a majority are on this tool, I love making new content for my players to play with, and honestly considering the other home-brew options this should not be that hard to actually create. The templates are already there, as well as, this isn"t a problem for FEW players, it is an extremely large chunk. I like the idea of DND beyond but I can barely use it because i have built 2 whole classes that I cant run on this. I live in a large city with an extremely large DND community, and vast majority of it would appreciate better home-brew options and the fact this has not been solved in 2 years disappoints me.
I definitely believe that classes are the most complex aspect of D&D to code for, they just have the most parts, it makes sense to me. I don't even have any classes I want to create, but I definitely think this should be on the list of things to add, it would just round out the homebrew feature set nicely, and I don't think you could really consider DnDBeyond to be a fully-featured homebrew tool without the ability to create classes. So, while I don't necessarily think it needs to be a short-term priority, I would just like to add myself to the list of people who would definitely enjoy having it as a feature. After all, we can't all be Matt Mercer to get our classes in DnDBeyond, even if the world could use a few more of him. :P
Adding myself to the (long) list of folk who would leave to see this function, and also the the long list of people who have yet to see any sort of reasonable argument for why it would be difficult. The most recent argument has been that they can't just make it like the subclass creator because then it wouldn't interact with all these other tools, and I'm sure that I speak for many when I say that I could honestly care less about encounter tracker or dice roller if it meant I could have a custom classes. To go a step further, I'd even say that many would be willing to have a "homebrew" mode in which if they use a homebrew class, they'll be using it with the understanding that it'll be very bare-bones and not with all the of the eye-candy that is so desperately trying to be sold here. This thread has been 3 years in the running and while there's certainly something to be said for an obnoxious vocal minority, particularly in the gaming community, its at least a little absurd that all that has occurred is "we have decided to move this priority from Never to Almost Never".
Now that you've posted in here you'll join the rest of us with getting periodic reminders that DDB still has no plans to implement this. You're in good company, as you continue to spend more and more money on the subscription and new books whenever they're released. And now you get to have little reminders every time someone new posts about this.
Maybe you'll do what I do and passive aggressively upvote every new user who jumps on the band wagon. Or maybe you'll just silently seethe as someone chimes in with a lazy, half-assed explanation of how hard this is to do. But no matter what kind of person you are, one thing is for certain: people will continue to ask for this. How many years will you watch this thread grow before we see even the slightest hint of progress?

Well, seeing as no one is forced to make purchases or use D&D Beyond at all, this post just comes across as childish and ungrateful. It's been said this will come with the homebrew revamp, which will also feature a more intuitive interface. And it's going to take as long as it needs to to be complete.
So if you want to continue wasting your hate on this feel free I suppose, no one can stop you, but there's plenty to be appreciative of here while waiting on further features to develop.

Lightning Strike - A rebranded Fire Bolt for Wizards & Sorcerers.
Spirit Bomb - A holy fireball for Clerics, Paladins, & Divine Soul Sorcerers!
Sword Dancer - A Cleric subclass specifically for the Drow goddess Eilistraee.
Exactly. While it will be a nice expansion of the homebrew tools once it happens, realistically it's a tiny (yet vocal) percentage of the user base who would use them. Far more users would get more use out of the other features being prioritized ahead of classes. Between all the races, sub-races and sub-classes that exist or can be created, there is far, far more customizability than I'll ever be able to try, so I'm among those who are perfectly happy to wait.

You aren't entitled to dictate the dev's resource allocation. I'd also like to see the homebrew revamp, but I understand that web development isn't easy. If you don't like the way your money is spent, then spend it elsewhere. Make your own homebrew website if it's that easy.

Wow! So mutch hate towards someone who just expressed their frustration that development seams to be really slow towards features that they beleve are important. While other features that are way less important in my opinion get developed. Like 3d collectible dice? Really? Does anybody play with screenshare, or in a form where the dice are seen by others? I understand it that they need more ways of turning a profit and that is totally fine, they are a company after all. But homebrew classes are missing for more than 2 years.
And TBH there are mayn other homebrew websites that are capabel of more than dnd beyond. But Wizards doesn't allow them to work with the official content. So DnD Beyond has a monopoly on the online character sheets. So yes if thery are the only funnly viable solution than they should try and allow it.
And about the homebrew rewamp... that thing is not even on the road map. It used to be, but it just disapeared. ( roadmap ) So i guess we are not getting that in the next year or so either.

Any timeframe on when classes will be available for homebrew? I'm definitely ready to try my hand at a bit of it!
No time frame. I wouldn’t expect it anytime soon, as lots of other things are on the “short term” roadmap and it’s not.

I don’t know that I’m disappointed at not having it. I am disappointed that we don’t have an ETA! I have some Homebrew classes as well!

I made a few homebrew things: backgrounds, feats, magic items, monsters, races, spells, subclasses.

Seriously DNDbeyond, the moment you implement this, you will have a lifelong subscriber out of me.

So far the ONLY thing keeping me from getting a subscription is the lack of this feature.
