a thing takes time and work? whoopity doo. updating the not-dysfunctional marketplace also took time and work, but they went after it regardless. trick is that someone managerial wanted an attaboy back-pat for the marketplace coming in under time and under budget. that's cannons and supplies tossed overboard to make the ship slightly lighter so some noble can brag they got to port half a day earlier. "ooh, look at what a good sailor i am because the competent people i hired did the parts of their job i let them do!"
maybe the phb could have come in under time and under budget if they'd thrown out some rules... grappling and jumping are so niche. change language choices to either common or 'other,' and that'd save some valuable letters. why have a list of gods when "ask your ai chat bot" covers that part? wouldn't new players be less confused with fewer caster classes? table of contents, more like table of extra weight!

Everyone wanted a bundle of the physical book and the digital, they had to build a way for the system to accomplish that which meant rebuilding the marketplace, they friggen gave you what everyone wanted (for the most part) and yet you still complain.

Sure there's the bundle, but that requires us to buy it online from WizBro instead of going to our FLGS or third party where you can get it cheaper. Besides, any alt-cover is a in-store only item and so that eliminates the possibility of getting the bundle. These things can cohabitate, you can have bundles and you can have piecemeal.

It is the exclusivity of FLGS only that adds value to the alt cover books. You have to make an effort to go buy them, would you be ok if they offered the alt cove/digital bundle at a 50% premium over the standard cover bundle, or do you just want your cake and eat it too?

This is a bit disingenuous. Not everyone wanted physical bundles and not everyone who did want it asked for them at the expense of piecemeal purchases. Nothing about building a new marketplace meant they couldn't reimplement old features such as piecemeal purchasing, or digital sourcebook/ adventure bundles, or stacking of sales, or any of the other conveniences they decided to leave out.

I didn't ask for bundles.
Historically I have gotten way better deals waiting for sales on DDB for the digital and sales from other retailers for the physical books than the current D/P bundles are, but for those wanting a one stop shopping experience this isn't a bad deal.
I think the new D/P bundles are a prime example of getting what you asked for only to find out it isn't what you wanted. AKA malicious compliance.

+1 to unhappy about shutting off partial purchases.
I totally understand the reasons behind it - we discussed them frequently enough - but it was such a positive, pro-consumer feature of the site that we always concluded it should stay, even with the difficulties it caused.
May we inquire as to what reasons they may of had? This community has been left in the dark with virtually zero communication from the new owners.
It is easy to imagine the reason. The ones in charge probably wanted to try to get more money per single customer without accepting that this is a "killing the goose that lays golden eggs" situation because the ala carte purchaces were what helped DNDbyeond to stand above its competition
That's certainly not a "difficulty it caused". This doesn't mean profit wasn't involved in Wizards' decision, but it's presumably not what Stormknight was talking about.
I personally never cared about digital and physical bundles, and the only reason they are just now implementing them is because of an edition change that requires warehouse space that is still full of older physical material that just isn’t moving out fast enough.
There was no need to quick end a-la-carte piecemeal purchases, if anything it could have been applied towards the bundle, and served as a means of getting some of that physical stock out the door.
But sadly Wizbro choose this course, once again pissed off one of its’ largest communities, and again does not seem to understand that talking to the community about the changes they might take and how it might impact everyone.
I’ve personally said to hell with Wizbro, they shall receive no more direct support or funding from me. And I shall continue to voice my displeasure with them in regards to their actions and decisions in how Wizbro thinks it should manage the D&D brand.
A-la-carte might not have been raking in hundreds of millions in revenue in the short term, but it did bring in new players and new money over the long term. Now, Wizbro has pissed that away, all because of a few within the company that has the mentality of profits over people.
Well, it's official, my campaign is dead and a large part of it is my players not wanting to use Dnd Beyond for easy character sheets, and me wanting to make sure everything is coming from official sources without having to pirate books to double check everything each session. Hoping Hasbros stocks crash, also the Humblewood campaign setting is on sale for 10 bucks from their publisher.
Mine is slowly dying. We are all letting the last bit of our subscriptions run out, no one is renewing. It's a shame - DDB was a solid system, but we just can't support this sort of anti-consumer decision making anymore.
It is also likely setting up the piecemeal is time consuming as well.

yes, corporate wanted to add the physical book button. but why didn't they blow some trumpets and announce exactly that? this day and age what company misses a chance to hype stuff like that three months ahead, a month ahead, and 'coming next week!' so more people will go click?? it was almost nowhere because they didn't know when it would be finished. it only came in early as it did because they hacked pieces off. the fact that they then had to scramble to support existing customers with tickets shows they didn't plan for this. some of us are complaining because functionality was lost. others of us are complaining because quietly cutting corners makes us worry what's next to go.
what i friggin wanted was to continue purchasing conveniently and contentedly here where i've already spent a chunk of change. can't do that if the flesh ripping robot replicants beckoning us back into the shadowy door can't even bother to mop up the blood and say a few reassuring words. I too canceled my subscription, not because the ended piecemeal, but for how they did it, very slimy. I do want it back, but it was not ever billed as a perpetual option unlike the bundle discount stacking which they advertised as a reason to buy the bundles on ALL FUTURE PURCHASES and DO STACK with SALES even after wizbro bought DDB, though they should honor the credits and they should stack with sales as they have prior to the changes is the new and less functional store, but them drawing a new line in the sand and moving forward (while I think it is a poor move) is how this should be handled, otherwise it is a huge breach of trust and I will not spend a bent copper on any thing from wotc, hasbro or any other company they own or do business with until they honor the deals made prior to 4.30.24! Anything after that as much as I may disagree with is a horse of a different color and their choice to make.

I'm in a similar boat to kayakingpoodle. I dislike the removal of piecemeal purchasing, but that alone isn't enough for me to avoid further investing in D&D Beyond. Piecemeal purchasing was amazing, but it was, ultimately, a luxury. For such a major thing like D&D, it was a cut above any competition and a huge draw for many. However, it was not "the norm" or the expectation. It was a fantastic bonus way to get into D&D but it should not be expected. I have never encountered another big TTRPG that offered this - so this was a pure luxury. It's a bit entitled to think this would last forever. Business models change over time, so the idea that piecemeal purchasing might have one day been removed as an option shouldn't be a surprise.
From my perspective I don't see the value in this decision - but then I don't have all the facts and figures, so that is just what it is.
What irked me about the removal of the option is the way it was done. Silently. Sneakily. Underhandedly. There should have been announcements, an explanation - which would not need to go into too much detail, vague is fine, but just something to say how with changes to the TTRPG market it was no longer sustainable. A couple of weeks, maybe a month. That's all. A head's up about the changes. If they had done that, while a bit disappointed, I could find it acceptable. But there was nothing. At all. Just one day boop all gone. Add in the difficulties, lack of communication (beyond the community manager who is doing their best, but no answers are really being given by WotC). Plus the pre-order fiasco. Other... Things I cannot mentions. And so soon after other breaks of my trust? Just silly.
If they had done this properly - I'd be fine with it all. Disappointed but OK, it was good while we had it. But the way they have done this is what makes me want to avoid getting anything new. It is why I've been looking at alternatives. When I am better financially and in better health I will, most assuredly, be getting into other systems. Until then, they can still have my sub, I have uses for it - I try to test things and help people and D&D, in general, is still a great game and D&D Beyond is great tool.
It's just a shame that once again WotC handled things extremely poorly. That, not the removal of piecemeal itself, is why I will no longer be buying any more D&D products.

What on earth are you getting at? I can literally order the alt cover online and drive down the street to pick it up on release day. And where is this 50% premium coming from, or are you just making shit up to fulfill some ego.
Well, with the news that DDB has presented on 06/18/2024, we now know why a-la-carte had been slowly stopped, and why the drastic change in the marketplace, so they can make the new digial rules content.
D&DB is a small pond in the huge world wide map of D&D. And piecemeal purchases are a small part of that.
one time 2 dollar purchases mean nothing to them. Now if you made that same purchase a subscription instead. They might just think about it. But any one time purchase of any amount is not continuing money coming in the door.
I bet they have reached market saturation with 5E and thus decided to bring out 6E to buff up sales. When those sales level off I bet they start some sales and bonuses. Eventually they might bring back some type of piecemeal purchase option but not until then.
Granted D&DB as a web sight needs to find out what will separate them from the rest of the pack. I for one would find and buy or even make the best mapping program and make it part of a subscription. I would buy up an STL website and program and start offering official miniatures with subscriptions.
Well, with the news that DDB has presented on 06/18/2024, we now know why a-la-carte had been slowly stopped, and why the drastic change in the marketplace, so they can make the new digial rules content.
Wait, what news update? I've checked their recent articles and there's nothing mentioning, let alone explaining, the removal of a-la-carte purchasing. It's just talk about new books? I can see they made a few videos but they seem to also just be about new books so I haven't spent the hour plus to watch them. Do they actually explain why they removed a la carte purchasing in those videos, and if so which one?
I feel like I've missed something.

100% this.^ It's why I cancelled my subscription and I'm unlikely to renew or make any further purchases unless they say something that shows they have any concern or respect for the community at all.
Totally agree, it's not what they did, It's how they did it. Beyond that just grandfather those that bought what you sold us!
CENSORSHIP IS THE TOOL OF COWARDS and WANNA BE TYRANTS.
