This is a good example of something that tickles me about public perception about development.
Doing this is actually harder than many of the other things we have on the list because granting others the ability to see character sheets introduces a whole new set of permissions. We can't let another player edit someone's sheet without her consent and displaying everything on the sheet in read-only mode means moving several of our calculations that happen instantly on the sheet server-side to render the locked copy.
Hope that middle part didn't bore you, but I thought I'd pull back the curtain a bit to say it's unfortunately not a small effort.
Rest assured though, I want read-only sheets for a variety of reasons and this will be a big part of the revamp. We're taking this opportunity to move around that logic to support it.
Thanks!
Just a thought, and not an ideal solution, but you could just grant access to the PDF view of the character sheet. That's already read-only.
Was about to post this. This would immediately help existing parties and games.
Being able to add spell effect to the character sheet would be awesome. Aid, bless, false life, fly, haste like the equipment section, save common spells and click to 'wield' them after they are cast. Releasing an API may be a good way to see what ideas come up and what people like. World of Warcraft has used this system to incorporate some of the most popular mods into their UI.
Sorry if already talked about here somewhere, but for the character builder updates, has there been any talk of customizing the number of attributes? Would love to make character sheets with the optional 'Sanity' attribute from DMG for some Halloween one shots later this month! Obviously would not be ready this month unless already being worked on, but something I would love at some point.
Any chance to change the Race selection to have a drop down selection for subrace after selecting race? Kinda sucks having to scroll by 4 aasimar, 4 genesai, 5 half elf, to get to human.

We're not sure on this one since we've received a good bit of feedback saying that having all subraces broken out is helpful to make sure all the options have higher visibility.
We would never be able to answer all the forum posts claiming that the Drow elf is not available in the builder even though it's been unlocked due to it not being a top-level option and tucked under "Elf."
We'll have to see as the layout changes are implemented if there are ways we can try to compromise on both sides of this.

I'm going to +1 this idea for three reasons:
It's consistent with the classes, which have their subclasses tucked under the class.
So as to stave off having an overwhelming number of listed options for new players. Much less daunting to click 'Aasimar' and then discover there are subraces.
It's a bit annoying to have to click "More Options" at the end of the list of races. There may be some on the forums saying, where's the tiefling?, because it's tucked under 'more options.'

Appreciate the feedback!
What about something like an arrow pointing to the right for things that have multiple subraces > you hover over Elf (which would have an arrow) > more options show up to the right and you see the subraces. Similar to how Amazon.com is set up -- I can hover over Departments > then hover over Books > then click Children's books.
I honestly would love if you could do that on the main menu with adventures/rulebooks too (hover over rules and you see the list of rulebooks then select the one straight from that menu. Less clicks is better!). It would be great for My Content, Characters, and Compendium at least.
What about making the PH options show up, but in gray? I know that might feel a little bit like upsell / advertising, and it's admirable to want to avoid that, but I think the argument "D&D Game Designers and Website Programmers have to eat too!" is a pretty strong counter.
(It'd be super-annoying for that to be the way all possible add-on content is displayed, but maybe for the "has not purchased anything" users? The work to code this would probably be paid back in time saved answering queries like the above. :)
Thanks for the quick response. I honestly saw this giant huge thread and assumed my post would be lost in the vastness. Its just a bit odd to me to have to scroll down past 34? options to get to human. And then, after scrolling that far, still having to click "Load more" for the most important racial option "Tortle" to appear.
As an aside it seems a bit silly that 40 is a valid number to show when opened, but 48 needs to click another button to load.
Personally, I would like the option of having the races sorted by a few options (saved as default for user) such as
"By book" so the PHB button would expand all phb.
By Race, Races listed, with variants expanded.
Alphabetical (current)
Common, uncommon, monstrous ? Maybe that would require some more work by the staff, but the phb lists common and uncommon races after them. And volos separates monstrous races.
I am more than fine with the Alphabetical current method being standard and I have to go into some menu to change my default to "By Race"

To add some weight to your point, I'm actually quite happy with the way things are now, with every race/subrace specifically called out. This makes things much easier in my experience for newer players who aren't sure what their options are.
If you know that you want to get to human, as in the above example, you can just start typing in the search bar to filter results.
I'll post the experience that really confused me as a new user.
I'm a new user to the site, and I want to join a campaign. I create my character. Since I don't have a paid sub, the only option open to me was the free races and the default domains (like life domain for cleric, etc for other classes). I create my character, because I have to have a character to join the campaign. Once I join the campaign, content is shared, so I can now go back and edit my character to do the non free stuff.
It's super confusing to have to create a free basic rules only character in order to join a campaign, and then have to edit that character to be non basic rules. Why not just let me join the campaign, and THEN create the character I want?

Well, you can actually. When you use the campaign link, the page asks you to select a character you already have or create a new one.

I second this. Even being familiar with quite a few races, I don't know all of them by heart. Having the sub-races listed out lets me go and see all of them "at once", giving me a bit of a reminder/refresher to see what my options are. And when helping others to make their characters, I was able to scroll through the basic options easily enough, while also being able to point out different sub-races. It may be more of a hassle to scroll, of I personally feel that the benefits outweigh the costs quite well.
I am not finding an exact answer to this question. I know that adding Archetypes for classes is limited to the free stuff without purchase, but what if I want to add one from UA? I wanted to add in Monster Hunter from Gothic UA. I would love to be able to manually add it in at least, but there is no option for that either. Is this going to be added at some point to add homebrew or custom archetypes?

Currently, homebrewed subclasses are not an option. But subclasses, feats, and such are on the radar.

Also, the team is working on adding Unearthed Arcana content, which I can't imagine will be paid content, given the nature of the playtest. So it's kind of a race between being able to add them yourself and having them added for you. :)
Pretty sure there's a bug with the Ranger's 'favored enemy'. According to the text "When you gain this feature, you also learn one language of your choice that is spoken by your favored enemies, if they speak one at all.". However, regardless of the enemy I pick, I'm allowed to pick any language I want. I also think it would be best if the enemy race was in the 1st dropdown and the language in the 2nd dropdown instead of reversed like it currently is.

We won't be able to restrict the language options based on favored enemy - there are too many exceptions that could crop up for us to be able to maintain the list of options appropriately. You'll need to work out with your DM which languages are allowed for your chosen enemy and go from there.
We'll look into rearranging the dropdown choices, as I agree that makes more sense.
Thanks!

Not sure if anyone else has raised this, there is currently only on option listed for the Warlock Patron - the Fiend
Is there any plans to get at least the other 2 options from the PHB in the system?
The other 2 options from the PHB are in the system - you need to purchase the Player's Handbook to give you access to them.
D&D Beyond can be used for free and contains information from the following "free to use" sources published by Wizards of the Coast: D&D 5th edition SRD, D&D 5th edition Basic Rules, and Elemental Evil Companion.
Content from other sources, such as the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, or Monster Manual, will need to be purchased from the Marketplace or accessed via another user sharing content with you via their Master Tier Subscription.
