D&D beyond needs a way to let people get the digital version of the player handbook if they bought the physical copy before discovering D&D beyond. Especially since a lot of the character generator option don’t show up unless you bought the digital version of the player handbook. This lack of a code in the physical version of the book for D&D beyond is definitely something that makes the website and the app unusable. The player handbook is expensive and people shouldn’t have to buy another copy to use D&D beyond. This is something that was poorly planned.
I find DDB quite usable despite not having codes in physical books.
DDB is making an effort to get codes into more products in the future, but there will never be a way to redeem a physical book that does not contain a code.
Out of curiosity, did you voice a similar complaint to roll20 or fantasy grounds (2 sites that also sell d&d source licences and don't have codes in the physical books)?
I actually saw this post earlier today. Not sure why it stood out to me more than some of the others, but it is a very reasonable way to view why you should pay for the DDB services.
Basically, you still need to pay D&D Beyond for all the time they spent digitizing the PHB's content, making it searchable, putting the cross-links and tooltips in, and creating the online character sheet and character builder tools (and everything else) to make it functional and easy-to-use.
Besides, there are discount codes and coupons all over the place. It's a wonderfully orchestrated site in my opinion. Making digital purchases here are permanent and recoverable. Sometimes those physical copies just don't last as long as we want them to, lol.

The people who get paid for you purchasing a physical book are a different group of people from those who get paid when you purchase from D&D Beyond. You are purchasing two different products; if you had purchased two physical copies of the books, would you expect the second copy to be discounted or free? Same logic with D&D Beyond.
That said, I think bundles would be a great idea - pay slightly more for the PHB and get a D&D Beyond code as well. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that violates D&D Beyonds contract with WOTC or WOTCs contract with Roll20/Fantasy Grounds/Wallmart/etc - it would be unusual if that sort of thing would be allowed.
First off, I love a good old fashioned paper character sheet, but that's beside the point. If they included codes, they'd have to be unique, and the odds of a guy just taking a picture of one he saw in a store, using it, and depriving the guy who actually bought the book, are through the roof. I would like codes too, but it can't happen. Not everyone is Lawful Good.
this is stupid because i want to make a lizardfolk but that requires buying volo's guide to monsters again and i don't think my parents want to spend 20 buck on a thing we all ready own.

Then buy the Lizardfolk race for $1.99.
Or spend some time and use the Homebrew tools to make it for personal use for free.

D&D Beyond allows anyone to do an incredible amount of things to enhance their D&D experience absolutely free. They are not, however, WoTC and make no money from the sale of physical books. If you own a physical book, all of the tools are available to create homebrew digital versions of the material and use for yourself and your campaigns absolutely free. A sense of entitlement to DDB's digital product because someone bought a different company's physical product makes absolutely no sense.

How do you propose D&D Beyond make money if they have to pay to give you licenses and get nothing in return?

please note it is easy and cheap to buy just what you want from dnd beyond. So buy the background you want for about 1.99 and the subclass you want for about $1.99 and your good as long as you play that character. All you are doing is paying them for the work they put into making the tool for you. If you would rather put in the effort yourself they allow you to homebrew it.

Amen brotha!...before this whole coronavirus hit i went to the movies and got soooo annoyed when they didn't give me a coupon to get the DVD for free. Stupid hedgehog.

I have the physical Player's Handbook as well. Between my two groups we have 8 copies of it.
Sarcasm On:
So, I take my PHB and get my code to put into D&D Beyond and get the PHB on here, and no wait. My copy was published before D&D Beyond was thing. That's not fair. I should get the PHB on D&D Beyond free because I own the book.
And wait, none of the errata is fixed in my hard copy of the PHB. Wizards should send me a new PHB!
And now that new book, published by Wizards of the Coast should give me a code to get a free copy of a digital book on D&D Beyond which is owned by Fandom.
Sarcasm Off.
I own every Neil Gaiman book in physical form. So, I should get every audiobook based on those for free? Because that's what you're saying. Two different versions of the same product from different companies means I deserve both only paying for one? Nope.
Sounds like a great way to get free stuff. I can buy the book brand new, get the code to get a free digital copy with integrated features and then sell the book to someone who doesn't use this site. Or they can buy the book and give me the code. Unfortunately the hard working creative people at WOTC or DndBeyond won't get compensated. They're already nice enough to let me buy the digital copy and then share it with up to 36 people with a subscription.

This has been discussed at length and won't happen.

no this my first complaint
the problem is i am trying to make lawful good dark elf ranger. but that option doesn't seem to be available unless you use there player handbook.

The other thing you can do is buy just what you need So for instance if you want to buy just what you need for your dark elf ranger.
The Dark Elf subrace is $1.99
The various subclasseses are $1.99
Whatever background you need is $1.99
If you have a feat you need its a $1.99
these will count towards the total cost of the players handbook later if you decide to invest.
You can also homebrew the various things you need and just buy the challenging to homebrew things.
