Currently D&D Beyond only supports registration through Google or Apple. They are always looking into other methods of account authentication should there be a demand for it.
I for one only initially signed up for D&D Beyond because there was an email signup option at the time. If it wasn't for that, I would just have skipped using the tool.

D&D Beyond has not had a direct login method since we've started. When DDB first launched, we were owned by Twitch, so Twitch was the only login method. Over time we added additional login methods (Google in April 2019 and Apple ID in May 2020).
Since your join date is in 2018, you would have used Twitch to create your account.
When I tried to login (via mobile) yesterday it somethhiing to the effect of "You've blocked 3rd party cookies on this device" - which I knew how to resolve, but if I didn't know I would have appreciated more info than "you blocked 3rd party cookies".
Ok what about trying to use DDB on fire tablet it wont let me sign in using google. I don't have twitch or apple. I keep getting error 400. And it happens on either Silk Browser, or Chrome. So an direct login would be great for a work around on this device.
Email and password login is not secure. People make bad passwords or forget their passwords. They reuse passwords, because humans aren't built to remember 130 different passwords. Passwords get stolen and then reused passwords compromise other accounts and services.
Other login methods may be considered in the future, but email and password is unlikely to be one of them.

You say email and password login is not secure and then list a bunch of bad personal choices. Are there legitimate reasons or are you just going to assume all of your users are incompetent?
Here's a 16 minute documentary about why tech companies are trying to eliminate passwords. If you want something shorter, here's a former Twitch engineer's take.

I understand the security aspect to it, but I wanted to add another perspective as to why not allowing email/password combos can be limiting. I am currently trying to setup a D&D work group as a team building experience.
My original plan was to have those involved register for D&D beyond using their corporate email accounts in order to keep the resource within the organization. Now that I cannot even create a corporate account to purchase the material that I wanted to utilize, I doubt we will be able to use DnDBeyond as one of our resources. Just food for thought.

I watched the whole video. At least it was upfront about its goals and perspective. I'm a consumer not a tech company worried about internal data breaches, so it wasn't very effective. It was 17 minutes of assuming users are failing basic security practices and explaining why those are expensive (mostly from the perspective of internal data breaches). Also a healthy amount of hyping up biometrics. This is D&DBeyond, I think you're over inflating the importance of my account security here. You are also feeding into existing monopolies. If every website had similar policies to yours, no one would be able to use the Internet without a Google, or Apple account.
This is a perfect point. A point that goes for a lot of people and as time goes on... will become more and more of the general population. I get having Google and Apple sign in as an option but to have NO option for people who do not want to be linked with one of the growing tech duopolies and highly irresponsible from a tech point of view. Google DOES get hacked. Apple DOES get hacked. I for one do not trust them and had to create a google account just to use this web site and that make it MUCH harder to use this web site. leading me to actually skip using on many occasions.
Regardless of what you think it is best or what you think is best for ME... that should be up to me. Not up to you. Having the google and apple options are NOT bad. I aploud you providing it... but to FORCE your users to participate with a 3rd party to participate with you is highly disrespectful for those of your users who are capable, willing, and desire to handle their OWN security. Also, the 17 min video fails to realize how flawed of a security tech Bio-metrics are. There have been many examples fingerprints and face scans being pulled from photos. Voice being fooled from from AI Trained deep fakes. Even totalitarian states leveraging their power over apple and google to get access to their systems or even forcing your own finger or face in front of a reader.
In a Corp environment, yeah, a lot of that makes since... but for individual users using your services from private purposes, please respect your user base and allow for private direct email sign in.
Respect our attempts to protect our privacy from tech duopolies and respect your users by just offering a direct email sign up. Nobody here is suggesting removing Google or apple. Just giving those of us whom do not trust them an option to not use them.
Thank you for your time and your hard work.

I have a player who does not have a Google or Apple account. Can they register using a different email account? If so, how?

Having had to "get round" this tonight... Meh, but an additional message or quick "how to" on the rejection message would welcome.

Sad, we need other ways to login to this site.
Like a direct login that would be perfect. Also have friends who don't have google or apple.
Seriously, you need a basic email login, like virtually every other service.

Google login is not secure: if I lose my Google account for whatever reason, I can't connect to D&D Beyond anymore.
Losing your account and being secure are two different topics.
Anyone with a Google account should at the VERY least secure it with a backup email and mobile phone number.
Even better is to add another layer using their 2FA app.
