How about “Igni” for a first name? It literally means “fire,” and “Igni Bellows” has a nice ring to it.
If I were gonna do a pirate my first instinct would be a Swashbuckler Rogue with maybe a multiclass into Bard for College of Swords as it would make a nice combo. Otherwise I would consider either a Path or the Depths Barbarian from Runtarra as it might fit Mx. Bellows fiery nature (if you need it I can hook you up with a copy), or an Oath of the Open Seas Paladin from Critical Role as it might fit the character’s swearing to become what those people feared most as a pirate of the open seas.
I actually used that Path of the Depths Barbarian for an NPC once and it worked well.
This character is actually part of an infamous pirate crew, captained by an NPC boss from another of my table’s campaigns.
His captain was a dwarf who was a Path of the Depths Barbarian. Bludgeoned his enemies with death with an anchor. Fun character.

as a kind of side note....what about a mechanic for eye patches?
we've heard the theory that pirates used eye patches for the sake of being prepared to operate in the dark holds of the ship as needed. How would one go about adding that into play?
Wearing an eye patch gives disadvantage normally? But when if you take it off in the dark you get advantage for a few turns?

Knave's Eye Patch could work. It's from Waterdeep: Dragon's Heist.

Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)
While wearing this eye patch, you gain these benefits:
You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.
If you have the Sunlight Sensitivity trait, you are unaffected by the trait.
You are immune to magic that allows other creatures to read your thoughts or determine whether you are lying. Creatures can communicate telepathically with you only if you allow it.

Oh; haha. Great minds!
Very much a “final boss” kind of character…they also had a Belt of Storm Giant Strength.
This dwarf could stall or sink entire ships either by hurling his anchor on a weighted chain to fell the enemy ship’s main sails…
…or engage in his favorite pastime; hurling cannon balls from a distance.
I made a blue skinned tiefling named Kortar Stormwave. He was designed to look and feel like Nightcrawler of the X-Men, who had a silver tongue (not literally) when speaking to the ladies (dumped CHR as his second stat). However, he couldn't resist a good drink - at which point, I'd always do my best Captain Jack Sparrow impersonation. :D
what is a pirate captain without a crew??? Be a Necromancer Wizard and have a crew of undead pirates to work your ship. There are plenty of other spells that would aid a pirate as well. Find familiar for the parrot on your shoulder. Gust of Wind for when the winds are light. Misty Step for quickly boarding and deboarding of boats. Water breathing can be helpful. Sending is good for communication/coordination when you are out to sea. And the fun doesn't stop therehttps://tutuapp.uno/ .

The dwarf was an absurdly mad savage.

Don't forget the storm soul sorcerer subclass. this also makes for great pirate captains as well as navigators
triton moon druid that hates ships and wild shapes to destroy and sink the ships
