Well, I really do hope they realise what a endeless f***up this is for them, and that they run off with their tail between their legs on this. I've cancelled my subscription.
Sadly, this is not a draft. They are claiming this is a draft, but even Kickstarter has come out to say they acknowledge the leak as real, and they received the document with a contract attached. As in, a contract to sign. This is not a drill, this is a declaration of war against the community's creativity. Regardless of whether or not this messes with the common folks game, it directly contradicts the spirit in which D&D was written, the intentions of the first OGL, and the safety of any Homebrew content. It's a moral issue, and it's certainly no dilemma. WotC wants to take content they did not create and sell it with full rights as if they paid an employee to make it. This is not kosher.
We can’t let this blow over as they want it. Tell everyone you know to unsubscribe. Hit their wallets because that’s all they apparently care about.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Cancelled my Master Tier Subscription 01/12/23 because of OGL 1.1
All sales are final on digital via support/tos. Don’t like the changes and practices of Hasbro/WoTC stop paying subs/buying their products. That’s what I am doing now.
as far as Im concerned, trying to change in any way or revoke OGL 1.0a is unacceptable. If WOTC wants to make a new OGL thats fine but the previous OGL should still be active along side it. Anything less drives my continued boycot of all WOTC products.
This post on the main page just reeeaks of pr consultant.
The "leaks" were not drafts, they were sent to content creators with contracts attached.
They haven't confirmed they won't slip in royalties clauses later on down the road.
As a long term MtG player I know too well the greed that powers WoTC. They're not worth anyone's time. This update is just seething lies pretending to be humble. They'll try again.
I un-subbed from my yearly sub. Will see what I can do to convert my current 5e games I'm dming to that /other/ system.
I just read the reply, and I feel a bit insulted. Especially since we had an internal leak that straight up told us that Hasbro saw us as "Obstacles to our money" The very first paragraph rubbed me the wrong way. I WANT to believe that the really do have some goodwill, and I'm sure there are individual employees that do, but my trust in WoTC and DnD, which I have loved and defended for nearly 20 years, has been shattered, and even if the proposed changes are okay, I don't know if I'll be reinstating my subscription. As any DM will tell their players "Actions have consequences"
They just released a statement full of lies about their intent that doesn't address all of our concerns. But honestly, any version that doesn't add the words irrevocable, isn't worth it.
As for your adventure, that sounds awesome. I think you should publish it online once Paizo wins it's lawsuit &/or completes their open gaming unowned license system, but under that other system. & I think you should do it for money. Sharing it for free is something cool, but I think that idea would reach more people if you did it as big thing. I know somebody who got an adventure published. Limited run, but publishing under the new license could really help boost it's profile as people leave dnd forever for similar games. I'm hiro 2 progagonist on google mail if you are interested.
No guarantees, but given that Stranger Things boosted all things dnd it's a great fit for the community. I hope to see it someday.
Unless they change it and go back to their original policy and say 'Sorry we didn't realize how big a deal it would be, we promise to leave it exactly as-is from here on out' - I'm just going to find another TTRPG system or make my own. I already make enough of my own homebrew content to do it, it's not like it's actual rocket science.
The fact that they're trying to change their policy so that they own my art, my content that I made for D&D is simply gutting as a creator. I have a half-finished 80's mall campaign that I was planning on putting together this summer and putting online for free; I even have the character art, player tokens, maps and enemies all drawn out, I just needed to finish the text that went along with it all ~ now if I put it out there using the D&D rules I'm supposed to put some special mark on it that flags it down as something that Wizards of the Coast could just steal for themselves, and I'm just SOL? What bullshittery is that - I'm both not surprised at all because this is where we're at in Mega Greedy 2023, and terribly surprised because it just goes against the grain of what D&D has represented to me for so long.
Even if they walk back the worst of this, how do we know they won't slowly slip it in over time, revising it bit by bit until it's just as absurd as this version? It's the whole slippery slope - they've decided to coat the whole thing in grease with releasing this, now I know that they're considering it and it's on the table. It's just a matter of time before D&D is just as hamfisted as every other IP, acting like fanart and fanmade content is somehow a negative rather than the FREE ADVERTISING that it actually is. What damned idiots.

The response reeks of PR, but is at least a step in the right direction. I mean, not enough for me to resubscribe. They have generated so much bad faith the in the past couple of months leading to this I will need more than just cementing OGL 1 Principles.
I didn't have a subscription, so requested account deletion. I don't use DnD Beyond much (lol can you tell by my account name?), just had the free stuff, but was considering taking another look with the pending 6e on the horizon. Not now. No D&D/WotC for me unless they significantly change their leadership and approach to D&D. There's plenty of other great RPGs with great fans and communities out there anyway! Time to find an alternative.
They just released a statement full of lies about their intent that doesn't address all of our concerns. But honestly, any version that doesn't add the words irrevocable, isn't worth it.
I have been a MTG player since I was 12, 32 now and have enjoyed DnD but the disrespect for the players, community and game itself has left a sour taste in my mouth. I will no longer support Wizards or Hasbro. Subscription to DnDB cancelled and I wont be buying anymore cards. These greedy goblins wont take my gold anymore. As a community not only do we need to boycott DnDB and MTG but also Hasbro movies and toys. If they care so much about there bottom line lets plunge it to the 9 Hells and see how they like it.
I don't play 3rd party content. At all. Of the 30 years I've known about DnD and have played TSR PC games up until now, my first purchased DnD edition, which is the entire 5e books, is the only edition I've bought into. When I was a kid I would play DnD tabletop solo. I had 1 starter kit ever. Now, I just purchased all the 5 edition books and nearly every board game for DnD; In the past two years I bought all the tabletop books and in the past month nearly every board game I could find. Point being, WotC has made a billion in the past year. None of that, from me, went to 3rd parties. Not a dime. BUT, this 1.1 is the most anti-trust driven and fraudulent theft of 3rd parties that WotC (1.0) themselves helped establish(1.0) is pretty sad, abhorrent, pathetic. There are tens of thousands of games that exist. Thousands of very unique digital and tabletop RPGs. None of which coincide with DnD in any legal form and WotC STILL made a billion. Why is that? Because people LOVE DnD NOT just RPGs but the experience, specifically, that DnD brings. Now, there is so much potential for DnD to STILL overcome it's competitors and to me for DnD to lock up like a paraplegic instead of coming up with new content is just, REALLY, bad business. I can think of numerous ideas to make DnD more successful. Honestly, it's great management and bad management combined that has kept DnD afloat. It's remarkable really. But 1.1, attack 3rd parties, is just bad. I don't care if you compete. That's just the premise behind Capitalism. If anything it's the most healthy fallback wealth has ever had in the history of the world. That competition drives innovation. And BTW, as I've stated in other channels, attacking the ONLY PRODUCTIVE members of DnD is downright upsetting.
HASBRO/WOTC DnD board games are probably the best means to improve DnD tabletop besides the new Unreal 5 OneDnD. I can't play with my kids digitally all the time. To me it removes the humanity in the conversation. And this OneDnD is going to be excellent when I can get the little minions doing more/less adult things (One DnD is far more accessible and Tabletop far less). However, I just purchased all the board games because I can't get my kids into the tabletop DnD. I feel if there were more tangible things my kids could do between tabletop and board games and then OneDnD the better. I think social aspects of families and society have fallen to digital platforms and we all know we ALL enjoy actual social experiences. Proof is in the success of Critical Role, of which I've only barely watched twice. I played video games since I was a child of 3 years old (I'm now 40). Every day of my life, with very small exception, I have played a digital game. I have NEVER gotten the blessing to play tabletop. I have played many many board games and digital games.
My biggest statement is this.. can't we all just be grown ups, get our assets through hard work and competition and honor our agreements. Y'know, the agreement doesn't have to sit well with anyone. But it IS an agreement by law. If you want to make it more challenging then make competitive works and stop griping because someone else made a product. As little as DnD has actually produced, and being as how much creative room exists, I really wish WotC and Hasbro would build more Tabletop/Board game combos. Board games that integrate better and create more perpetual experiences. My kids LOVE survival/world building digital games. Make DnD more accessible and cheapen the production costs of supplemental materials for the tabletop variation. Make a board game that is high level and the tabletop the low level combo experience IN the physical world not just digital. Like Dragonlance Krynn board game. I'm super stoked about it. I'm so stoked about that I have been thinking about ways to make Lords of Waterdeep integrate with Dragon Heist to give my kids something tangible. Something they can be excited about 'gaining' a foothold over THEIR competitors aka family.
That's my two cents. I have not ended my subscription because people who have no idea about DnD are running the show and they will make really really dumb decisions. But that can be fixed.
They just released a statement full of lies about their intent that doesn't address all of our concerns. But honestly, any version that doesn't add the words irrevocable, isn't worth it.
Yeah, I'm done. I've been playing D&D since 1st Edition AD&D, followed WotC when they bought TSR, and, 4e aside (although I did buy the core rulebooks), have been a loyal customer for over 20 years for WotC.
I'm out.
I've had D&D in my family for 3 generations. And now it's going to end with my kids. Unless WotC gets their heads out of their backsides, and quickly, renouncing this stupidity, apologizes, fires EVERYONE responsible for this trash of an idea, I'm leaving for good.
And it pisses me off. Like, really pisses me off. I'd sooner create my own system than use D&D any longer. Unless the D&D brand gets bought by someone else with morals, I'll NEVER come back.
I had already decided to pause my subscription and buying of content. The last book I bought was Fizban's Dragon book. If these OGL changes go through, I will not buy ANY WOTC product again. I will be very happy with any other RPG such as Vampire, or Pathfinder 2.
Well, I really do hope they realise what a endeless f***up this is for them, and that they run off with their tail between their legs on this.

I cancelled last night, Master Tier sub due to renew on the 3rd of February - how's that for timing?
I might just look into this Pathfinder thing instead.

Why would they call it an early draft if it had to be signed and returned by January 13th (today)?
Because they want to gaslight us and shame anyone who pushed back against it
