Fun Question - If your friends/family/whoever, put down YOUR stats - how would they rate you for: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma? Bonus Points - What Class would they say you probably are?
I absolutely cannot take a drink, and if I run for more than a minute I practically die. Super unaware of surroundings when concentrating, but I think I'm decent at noticing small details. Charisma is pretty self-explanatory.
I believe that I would be an Artificer. I know a little bit of programming and wiring, and I like to think that I'm relatively logic-focused. I would prefer Wizard, but I'm not bookish at all.
Goblins, kobolds, dragons (of course), mind flayers, and most of all mimics. Mimics are kinda cliché, but I like them. Definitely using Caerwyn's treasure hoard mimic idea.
Apologies for the late replies; I got banned for 3 days. I would detail the reason in this comment, but I don't want to risk more infraction points. See signature if curious.
I play DND like the players and the DM are writing a story. The players are the characters, and the DM is the narrator, and together they try to make a story together, making decisions that make the story more interesting. It is also fun to be able to fight dragons and save people using magic and swords. Being able to talk with your friends about the time a mind flayer nearly ripped your brain out but you sliced it in half with your axe is really fun.
my great great great grand pappy was a dice miner in the Yukon. and since then each generation has mined D20's and D10's in the mines as our way of life. I D&D cuz it's the way of our family, even when the foreman tells us to mine more percentile dice and we tell him it's just a marketing gimmick, we still buckle down and pull those double digit pentagonal trapezohedrons because it's a calling to us folk!
Thankfully, there are other people who read that question differently from what came to mind and I was able to avoid crossing the streams.
I do it to escape the crap that I do on a daily basis. To not have to think about the things that I do so that I can earn enough to pay for all this stuff.
I can also point out that it is an incredible coping mechanism for certain things, and all that, but, really…
I do it so I can get all these stories and places and things out of my head. I have had worlds in the void twixt my ears since I was 7, and they are never satisfied with just me…

D&D is a game that can offer something for everyone—and can always adjust to fit the mood of the table. It is a game where two characters can have a touching moment of understanding as they realise a shared experience; it is a game where the BBEG’s evil monologue can be completely derailed by a well-timed fart joke. D&D is everything to everyone, and the fun is working with the other players—and with the Dice Gods—to come up with something everyone can share in.
I D&D because I like world building, telling stories, and playing games, and this is a way I can do all of it. It's also nice that my friends also enjoy it.
I play D&D because it's a great way to hang out with friends and have fun. Not only that, but it provides a break from real life and lets me go worlds where I could never really go and lets me help forge an incredible story in a brand new world.

Well, originally because I was in love with the idea of living The Hobbit type adventure way back in the 4th grade - that's what first got me into D&D.
That was probably long before most of ye wee lads were born!
These days, as to why? If I am honest...
Therapy.
D&D is literal therapy for me. It creates so much laughter and fun - that it erases all the bad crap that's going on around me - for that brief time I get to escape (either as a player, but especially as a DM).
I've talked about it before - I wanted to be a writer after my 4th grade teacher read The Hobbit to the class. That book changed my world.
However, when you're a writer - and you hand someone (even a short story!) they will say, "Oh, sure I will get to it." And sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
When you're a painter - you get an instant reaction (good or bad) if you show someone a painting.
D&D for me is painting with words - my players (when I DM) - give me the instant reactions to whatever I am weaving. It's an incredible experience.
And the fact I DM several games, all in the shared universe, has helped make my D&D world feel so alive.
I do the D&D because it can make amazing things happen.
No other game type can generate the same kind of reactions that RPGs can. You can say you play because it's fun, but it isn't only because it's fun. It's because of the interactions and stories that occur during play. When talking about D&D (or other RPG) rarely do people say "my character did XX thing". It is much more common the hear, "I did XX or we did XX". In your mind, your imagination, you and your buddies did these awesome things. Those scenes in your mind are why I play.
One of the standout things that happened was this:
I had my grade school students do writing assignments on what kind of hero they would want to be; math assignments to purchase equipment they think they might need on a camping trip or adventure; art projects to envision what their hero might look like...
"Farmer John is having a problem in his dragon berry fields and he needs you to help him. What do you do?"
One of my kids was very shy. She had never spoken to me during the whole year, and even with her peers it was in short whispers. I described the problem - Farmer John has giant cockroaches eating his crops.
"I smash them with my battleaxe!"
That's why I play.

I don't have a lot to add to what other folks already said above, but at least for me, D&D has also become a way to keep the creative taps open. I write and edit for my day job, but it's not the most creative sort of writing, and it's easy for those mental muscles to atrophy a bit. Thinking about the campaign I'm running might head next, coming up with new character concepts and homebrew and whatnot really does help

If spells aren't allowed? Ki. The ability to do badass Wuxia shit would be badass. Lay on Hands is a good one, but you'd be snapped up by the government in a heartbeat. Anyone with for-real Miracle Healing has capital-T Trouble in their future, sadly.
Honorable mention to Magical Tinkering; being able to create minor-but-useful magical effects on the spot with nothing but basic tools would be super nice.

It's a fun thing to do every few weeks with friends. Hell, I've made friends playing D&D and I'm not exactly a socially comfortable human being.
Plus, it can be a fun creative outlet.
