Dear fellow players, I have a doubt about the 'Death Lance' weapon that the 'Drow Inquisitors' use.
Is the weapon a +5 Weapon? Or is it a +3 Finesse Weapon?
I don't really know what to think, because the weapon would seem like a Spear (in concept and base damage die - the picture also remembers kind of a two-pointed spear), but a Spear is not a Finesse Weapon... On the other hand, I always thought that the maximum bonus for a Magic Weapon was +3, in 5e, then a +5 Weapon shouldn't exist; could this be an exception?
The Drow Inquisitor has proficiency bonus +5 (easy to infer from its spell attacks), STR bonus + 0, DEX bonus + 2... and with its Death Lance it attacks at +10 to hit causing 1d6 + 5 piercing damage (plus further damage/effects - which however have nothing to do with with current reasoning); the only two explanations that I can find (excluding a typo) are: A) the Death Lance is a +5 Weapon B) the Death Lance is a +3 Finesse Weapon Unfortunately, the Drow Inquisitor's description doesn't make this clear.
What do you think? What's the correct explanation?
Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

The likeliest answer is that the attack uses the drow inquisitor's Wisdom or Charisma modifiers, both of which are +5.
Most likely WIS, since it's their casting stat.
Interestingly, the Monsters of the Multiverse version actually uses Charisma for spellcasting.

The Wis on the legacy version was probably either a mistake or an artifact that got missed or something like that since the Drow race uses Cha as its spellcasting stat. Either that or they changed it to Cha to “streamline” things and just standardize all Drow stuff to Cha.

It was because the Inquisitor was essentially a Cleric. A real one, with actual spell slots and the ability to modify their options, not this watered down "here's their casts per day, you'll have to just make stuff up if you want them to do anything else" format.

Well...
Drow (and other less spellcaster-y drow) uses Charisma

I suppose because the Inquisitor is framed as being more socially oriented and, as I noted, they tossed out the idea of consistency and flexibility for NPC caster blocks.
The hypothesis that the Death Lance uses WIS or CHA is also interesting... Thanks for mentioning it, it hadn't occurred to me, mostly because I couldn't think of other weapons that had this property. But this also makes sense.
It's really a shame that they didn't specify; this often makes no difference, but in some cases it does... for example if the DM wants to modify the statistics of a particular Inquisitor (perhaps because they are creating a specific one, which they want to make slightly different from the standard Inquisitor), it becomes difficult, as long as this uncertainty remains, understand if and how the parameters of the attack with the Death Lance should be modified...
Or worse yet, managing some spells, this information would have been important. If a Drow Inquisitor is hit by a Ray of Enfeeblement, for example, the Inquisitor deals only half damage with weapon attacks that use Strength. But if for the Death Lance it isn't specified whether the attack uses Strength or not, it also becomes difficult to decide whether the Drow Inquisitor in that case must deal only half damage!
They really could have spent an extra sentence to detail this better.

Well, MotM blocks have a lot of problems...
Or at least, I'm not a fan of a lot of the recent design changes. Not even sure why they did that for the Inquisitor.

Doesn't seem super standardized to me.

Beats me why they changed it then 🤷♂️

A) the Death Lance is a +5 Weapon
my 2 cents.
I didn’t see what you did there.
