So I've been a DM for about five years now. And I have a pretty damn good grasp on what makes players tick. How to make good combat, character moments, and of course: magic items. I am in brainstorm mode and am wondering what the community thinks. From a player perspective, what makes a magic item a really fun one? Is it a unique mechanic that is only possible with the item? Is it the power fantasy? Or is it simply how versatile and downright COOL it is? Please give examples of magic items and their abilities you have loved to use https://showbox.bio/https://tutuapp.uno/
Most of the time for me is either fulfilling a missing niche in a character (my friends wildfire druid getting a wand of fireballs) or just the random fun they can bring, bag of tricks! I once had a player pull a goat, and constantly successfully knock down the BBEG. They had a blast over that.
Jut a little more experience in terms of years, and ime, the thing they want most can be boiled down to 3 things:
1 - It lets them do something they want to do but cannot.
2 - It improves existing abilities they have.
3 - It has some cool lore to go with it that makes it interesting and worth bragging about.
However, I note you asked for Player input, and I am purely a DM.

I'd add that its effect is something that's useful in the game. A magic item that gives +10 to persuasion checks might be cool, but if it's a game that's combat-centric without any real social interactions with NPCs, it's pretty useless.

For me, something that makes the game more interesting. Changes up our tactics and makes us approach the game differently. Handing me a +3 Spell Focus is awesome, but a good magic item is more like thr Bag of Tricks that was mentioned earlier which really changes things up. Alternatively, a Summon or something you can plan around. I want items that change things up.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
I enjoy items I never would have expected or asked for, but then you have them and try to figure out when to use them. Like an alchemy jug. Damned if I’m not going to find some way to use a shit ton of mayonnaise. Or a pipe of the sewers, I never sit at character creation and think I’m going to want to become the rat guy, but then I do and it’s kind of awesome.
