im specifically looking for something with a similar layout instead of the pdfs which are limited. using this place is too expensive for the service im given
Best advice as a person who also likes free and cheap means to play D&D is to scout around.
There are a ton of things and tools around that with a decent bit of time and effort are free and with even a decent spreadsheet program, can be cheaper and easier than most dedicated sites.
Of course you could just blow a Hundo on just the core three, PHB; DMG; and MM, and roughly 60$ on a yearly master sub with perks, and hope your investment is worth it.

I agree. Scout around! I have not used Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, nor Foundry, but people seem to like them enough so they should definitely be checked out.
Even better, scout around for another GM who already blew thousands of dollars on D&D! Especially for people who hate Wizards, makes more sense to blow a Benjamin for a fellow GM on snacks and drinks than handing Wizards a greenback to wipe their butt with.

I'd throw my content sharing, legendary bundle including everything official through 2022, and all 3pp so far at a good DM that would run a decently scheduled game in a group I got along with.

Agreed, this is why I started buying both physical and digital books I am short a few adventures in the physical format, and a few things digital all of which I have no interest in playing/using but would buy if someone wanted to DM it. I even share my stuff with DM's to use in other games I am not in if we play together on a regular basis.

I'll drop a random character in other people's campaigns if they have content sharing on.
Pro: They get access to lots of sourcebooks. Con: They get access to hundreds upon hundreds of my private homebrew they have to sift through.

If you join roll20 you can get a character sheet that works pretty well. It is far easier to deal with custom stuff.
On D&D Beyond, to add a custom anything you have to leave your character sheet, go to homebrew section, and go through their create a spell/magic item, etc. It is a complete process that takes a lot of time. Then you add it to your collection, make sure your character sheet lets you add homebrew, then add it.
Much easier to just put the important details in roll20, no leaving the character sheet and you do not have to add everything, just the stuff you want.
Good answer. Roll20 + Discord has done more for me as a DM and player than paid DnD Beyond is even capable of right now.
I respect the gall to ask this on the DDB forum itself!
I was literally just looking for alternatives now that spells and classes can't be purchased a la carte anymore and found your thread. Don't let them gaslight you, this is genuinely not worth the money anymore.
Thanks for making this thread, it's truly solidified my decision to finally stop using DDB.
im glad that this helped im using anything but myself only using it for the sourcebooks that i already have and sometimes character creation. i agree the decision to remove individual purchases is bad and i easily recommend owlbear rodeo and "external sources" over roll 20 and such, really roll 20 sucks its not worth the money.
also dont worry ive been ignoring the people here it was worth a shot and i still get notifs from this place from time to time that make me dread opening up this place but im glad to be met with a message like this
Roll20's new Character Creator still has bugs, and has a chance of corrupting your Sheet where it duplicates all your entries until it replaces everything you had prior. Lost 3 characters this way, and no backup to restore them
You can checkout Galveon (discord). Available for iOS and web. We are building the same exact features as D&DBeyond for all game systems instead of only 5e (we created it because we play 2e AD&D and wanted the same type of digital companion as D&DBeyond but for 2e. Currently working on classes and campaign management and are open to feedback/feature requests.
In its current form, it's a character companion and home-brew tools.

If you don't want notifications from a given thread anymore, there's a "Tools" button at the top right, under which you'll find the "Unsubscribe" option. The system automatically subscribes you to any thread you post in so that you're notified of replies, but you can disable that anywhere you like.
It really, genuinely sucks how asking for a free character generator gets you infinite amounts of people who can't read telling you to go pay for D&Dbeyonds sub-par tools. Really wish someone would make something like Pathbuilder for this system but i'm pretty sure Wizards in their infinite generosity would stomp it out of existence on sight. The closest i've found to a builder is fast character, but it's also not perfect and I think is only good for *starting* characters, not building them.

The homebrew sharing could use a few updates lol!

You can share the web version of the character sheets through the link. This is how I share with my players quite often.
The browser address of a character looks like this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/72453335
The above is a broken link, but it's to show an example.

there isnt really a great character creator for dnd and it sucks

There is one, it just costs money.

Do you mean roll20? It seems like there's issues with that one even aside from needing to repurchase all your books through them.
