I still need to watch the video and I'm interested to check out the VTT but I also think it's a bit too much and prefer using Maps. I don't love Roll20 and have actually been hoping that Maps in D&D Beyond will continue to receive love but I think it lost a lot of internal support to the VTT development although recently it's been plowing ahead. I'm just curious how everything is going to fall out once everything is out of Beta in terms of subscription/micro-transaction/etc.
Thanks for the link! That map looks gorgeous, I can't wait to get my hands on it!! *prays to Gond for a beta key*
Just apply for one, they'll give it to you when beta starts.

Attended the VTT talk. Be wary of the YouTube people presenting "information" on their "insider look" from a few days ago. I've seen lots of bad takes. I'm very much encouraged by what they said. The digital VTT will be a way to play, but not the only way to play. Will first be D&D focused and will implement the rules like other VTTs. Homebrew stuff will be allowed. Books aren't going away. Seems like a lot of what they are planning will really be based on how people are using the VTT coming out of Betas.
Looks like they are focused right now on making it so DMs can build adventures in it. I imagine a lot of this will be them giving us the same tools they use (dog fooding). Still unsure of the pricing (that question was asked but not clearly answered). My suggestion here is at least let the DM pay to cover the costs of players at some level. If my players have to pay, I won't use it. If the value is right (storage space, options, free content, etc) I'm willing to pay extra (See what Roll20 does for prem as an example), and can see cases where some players want to share costs, but if my players have to pay, I'll nope right out.
thank you for cominnnnnng <3

1:16:20 for those wanting to get straight to it.
Though I did find it interesting she pronounced it as "siggle" instead of "sih-jill". Is the Sigil plane pronounced that way?
I believe it is, it was mentioned on one of the videos to promote Planescape when that released. Crawford even joked about the amount of confusion its caused over the years (it's probably also the cause of Matt Mercer's inability to say the word in early Critical Role, if the only pronounciation guide he'd ever seen is D&D no wonder he kept mispronouncing it)
VTTs are not really my cup of tea - but one of my players in an online campaign wants to try their hand at DMing, and they struggled with their overhead camera and miniature usage last time they made the attempt. Been keeping an eye on this for their sake.
Even as a VTT skeptic, I have to say, it looks pretty good! The minis look better than things like HeroForge (which I am not super fond of), and I love the dorky way they kind of move around like an actual mini.
Besides the obvious questions about monetization and content sharing, the questions I have, particularly for those at GenCon or who have had access to it - are on how hard is it to build maps? I saw there was a still image of construction, and it looked kind of like Sims level of difficulty - drawing walls, placing objects. That could be fine - provided it is a smooth user experience and not the disorganized mess of assets that many VTTs have.
Curious if there will be any automation or if everything will have to be done by hand for custom maps. That was always one of my friend’s skepticism about VTTs - he does not really find drawing maps on a computer all that fun, particularly given how user-unfriendly many VTTs are.

It's not confusion. It's one of those cases where the creator of something spells the word or name following specific rules in English, and then chooses to pronounce it in a way that doesn't follow those rules. ie GIF ( Graphics Interchange Format ) most people pronounce it Gif (as in Gift) which is how the English language says it should be said. Yet the Creator and half of the population call it gif (as in giraffe, or Jif peanut butter).
Sigil a word in English, which means seal, is pronounced Sig-il (/ˈsijəl/) but the guy who invented the Planescape setting called it Siggle like giggle, but spelt it the same as sigil. Which is frustrating to anyone aware of this. Also I refuse to call it Siggle, as it sounds wrong, and would be spelled differently if that was how it should be said.
D&D has a history of almost trying to wrong-foot people with names etc.
For example, ask someone what a gorgon is, and they'll either respond with small aliens looking for a new home, or a half woman half snake creature. Meanwhile, D&D give us this:

This is not something worth getting worked about. It’s their product, their world, their program. They want to make a silly-sounding fantasy name? That’s fine for them - I’ll still be calling it Sig-il… but I’m also not going to be the kind of person who tells a creator “I know more about your creation than you do.” Especially when this is not just a mere error (like what D&D has always called a “longsword”), but was a specific choice by folks who know how the word is normally pronounced.

Quite right! It’s like when I visited Louisville, KY and kept accurately correcting everyone that pronounced it “Loo-uh-vull” that they in fact lived in “Lewis-ville!” How dare those cretins think they get to call their home whatever they want? That’s what I yelled as I was run out of town any way…

Like you, the new VTT is not something I have interest in, but many friends I play D&D with are excited for it and I am just as excited for them. I hope it is awesome for those that will use it!

CENSORSHIP IS THE TOOL OF COWARDS and WANNA BE TYRANTS.
For example, ask someone what a gorgon is, and they'll either respond with small aliens looking for a new home, or a half woman half snake creature.
Huh. Well, neither of those are any better than D&D did.
By Greek myth, Medusa is the proper name of one of three Gorgon sisters, so Gorgon should probably be the name used for a medusa.
There aren't any mythical iron bulls that I know of, but there was a bronze fire-breathing bull -- the Khalkotauroi.
In Greek myth, half-woman half-snake would probably refer to Echidna, though Lamia was also occasionally represented as serpentine. The D&D lamia may be confused with Lamassu.
I've been using AboveVTT it's a web extension in chrome but it links to D&D Beyond and pulls in the maps, NPC, Monsters for any D&D material you own on D&D Beyond. The maps are already set with dynamic lighting. If you don't own a lot of content it has tons of built in quick encounter maps. So if you like maps and they don't continue to develop it, this is an option
what I would like is a downloadable hightmap of all of Toril that can be imported into unreal engine, to make my own settings based sandbox that I can add assets to. Or, skip me doing the leg work, and they release a 3d version of the entire world premade.
They posted a live play from gen con that uses it. You can see it starts at about 1:15.

I'd spend a few dollars on that
Fall is practically over, and yet I don't see any news about the Beta's release.
