That said, part of the issue may be that they've used idiosyncratic American terminology. Despite being fairly fluent in American parlance, I was not aware until this thread that Americans consider fall to end on winter solstice. For me in Britain (and I daresay in other countries too), autumn ends in five days, and winter begins the day after. We actually have winter months, spring months, summer months and autumn months.
If you think that is interesting, then you will really be blown away to learn about North America and Groundhog Day (the yearly observance, not the movie).
Oh, and for the sake of clarity since there is misinformation being spread, herestwhat D&DBeyond said when someone signed up:
You're signed up!
You will receive an email invitation
to the Project Sigil closed beta when
it begins. For news and updates, please
stay tuned to D&D Beyond.
“When it begins” can be “immediately when it begins” or “after it begins.” Both are acceptable readings of the phrasing. Clearly Wizards did not mean the “immediately” (or they did originally, but were so overwhelmed with signups that they had to change their plan - also very, very common in software testing).
As I said, they could have communicated better - there is some ambiguity in how they wrote their message and they have a player base that loved conspiracies and grinding axes. I don’t really see why it is a big deal - folks will get their keys eventually and a slow rollout is going to result in a better final product and better experience when folks finally do get beta keys.
Call me old fashioned, but I would rather wait a few weeks or months and have something be done right than get upset and try and take to the forums to spin ambiguous writing into some kind of “they lied!” conspiracy.
Can you imagine the level of conspiracy theories and axes being ground if they let everyone in on day one and the whole thing crashed and took weeks to get back up? They’re buggered no matter what they do
There's still most of a month left, and even if they don't make it, failing to meet a goal is not necessarily a lie. Software development is not exactly a simple endeavor, projects fall behind.
Then why didn't they announce that there's been a delay? All I've heard were RUMORS on there being a delay, not that there's an official announcement for one.
I don't exactly find the "reply" feature very reliable when it comes to context in a conversation. Every time I use "Reply" it leaves out the context of the conversation and it would only lead to confusion for onlookers who are reading the forums. Also, it's because you made the OP, and it's not like I can say "So that was a freakin' lie" right outta nowhere only for people to go "What is?"

Because, again- setting aside all the other points raised since- they'd still have about 4 weeks to meet the goal. If they could squeak by in the meantime then there's no point in announcing a delay that all the bad-faith actors will loudly raise a ruckus over claiming WotC is faking all their progress and too incompetent to put a product together, and if they couldn't then they just say something closer to the point and have approximately the same net effect it would have if they broke the news a few weeks earlier. But this is all pointless because as has been pointed out the closed beta is indeed starting, an within most colloquial interpretations of what part of the year is covered by "fall".
Part of the problematic wording that sets expectations is "You will receive an email invitation to the Project Sigil closed beta when it begins," which is obviously not true. Perhaps. "You may receive an email invitation to the Project Sigil closed beta after it begins," would be more accurate. Also, adding an explanation to set customer expectations and explain criteria might be a good idea to communicate with honesty, transparency, and a demonstration of good faith might also be in order.
I have been a Master tier subscriber for many years and have not received an invitation...
Why make people sign up for the Beta if only a few people are going to have access to it?
As has previously been said it’s probably a staggered roll out in order to stress test the system. Just because you haven’t had an invite yet doesn’t mean you won’t
