I just saw there is a new feature in the section Marketplace called "Redeem a Key". I looked in the Developer update info and din't saw anything about it. Now im curious how it work's. Dose anyone has some information about it? Is there a plan to unlock real books in dnd-beyond or special other things that can be unlocked?
I'm sure that there will be an official announcement soon on what it's for and how it will work!
My understanding is that it will allow gifting of content on D&D Beyond (so you could for example purchase the Player's Handbook on D&D Beyond for a friend and send them the key, so they can add it to their account).
All will become clear when it's officially announced.
As the changelog says, the primary purpose is to allow user to enter a code which will then grant them a specific product from the marketplace.
As Adam says, this is currently being used to allow people to unlock the D&D Beyond digital Waterdeep Dragon Heist, when they have purchased the Waterdeep Dragon Heist Platinum Edition box set.
Pretty cool that we're starting to see this and I am excited to see where this might go!
Does this mean that all future physical books you buy will have a product code to redeem and get access to the digital content? that seems to make the most sense.

Unfortunately, that's not good inference - it's currently exactly what has been stated above, no more, no less.
I am certain that there will be further options for purchasing keys in the future as BadEye has mentioned already a desire to add functionality to allow gifting of content. That could use the redeemable key system too.
I actually have a lot of the physical books. Kinda sucks that they don't allow cross platform purchase where I have the physical books so it allows me to automatically unlock the digital books as well

It was said best in another post, think of it this way, you're at a table playing at your local game store, you need another copy of the PHB or another book for someone at the table. Just because you already have a book with you, doesn't mean you automatically get the other book for free. it's that simple, I too first thought of it the same way you did, it was then explained to me in this way so it makes sense now. WOTC is not trying to "double dip" on their customers.

I see what you're saying and agree to a point. The problem is that they have set it up so that if you want to use the character creator on here and you already have the content in a physical book you have to pay for the content a second time. Perhaps they could allow the unlocking of content you've already paid for but not unlock the digital book for the person unless they purchase it. While I understand they don't want to give double value to people it's not really fair for the people who purchased the book to have to pay a second time just to be able to use what they bought on the character builder. Basically, they're punishing their customers who went to the trouble to buy a physical book, or at least that's how it feels to said customers when they have to pay to unlock something they've already paid to use.
Except WOTC doesn't own, nor operate, or even have anything to do with D&D Beyond. They licensed the rights to make an online character builder to Curse. Just like any other licensing situation, just because you bought something of the original property doesn't mean you get free stuff from the license. And when you buy a physical book Curse doesn't see a penny of that so why would they give you the product that they made for free?
I get what you're saying, but the problem remains players and DM's who buy the physical book and wish to use the character builder are getting charged twice. Once for the book and once to be able to make a character with the things they have already purchased. For me I won't be buying any physical books, why would I when I can get a digital copy and be able to use the content in the toolset. But I still feel for the people who will have to repurchase all the content on here just so they can use the toolset.

The other problem with this besides the D&D Beyond people not making anything off of that type of sale is that there is currently no way for the D&D Beyond people to verify that you've purchased a physical book, and if WOTC were to start giving new purchasers of a new edition of the physical books key-codes for D&D Beyond users who purchased those books ages ago would still be SOL.
Personally, I think Curse should look into setting up a shop where they can sell a bundled D&D Beyond version + the physical version for a slightly reduced price versus the cost of the two of them together. They'd make less off of people who would buy both physical and digital copies of the goods, but more off of people who have problems with paying full price for both. It'd be an interesting experiment, anyways.

I really don't understand your argument here. You say that you have to pay a second time to make characters with something you already bought. That is not the case at all. You can make characters with just the books just fine. The problem is you are viewing Beyond as the same as the books like it's some kind of extension to the physical media. Which it is not in any way. It is a completely separate service. Just like you don't have to pay for a VTT to play at home, but if you want access to a VTT you have to buy it or use a freeware version. Same applies here, either buy the service or use the free version. Almost everything can be inputted through the homebrew system, so if you really don't want to buy the service you can manually input all your books data.
Again, your issue is you see it as repurchasing when it isn't that at all. You never purchased the service on Beyond before, so there is no repurchasing involved. Just like if you buy a book from your local bookstore you don't get a free kindle copy, or if you buy a movie from a local store you don't get a free digital copy. Both of these examples have exceptions, in that a lot of book/movie stores or producers also have digital services themselves and can provide keys for digital copies, but these leads back to the fact that WOTC and Curse are two different companies, and one can not just give you the others product without some kind of deal/contract/etc. Just like a local bookstore can't just say that Amazon has to give you a free digital copy, they would have to buy the key to give to you.
Actually quite often when you buy a movie you do get a free digital copy it depends on what movie and what company the movie DVD was created by. Dnd Beyond was marketed as part of The Wizards of the Coast product, the fact that Curse is part of it is not the point. If they didn't want people to see it as part of each other they should not have marketed it to the public the way they did. Though I do see what you're saying. There are other options though.
So perhaps making it free for people who have bought the book is not the way to go. However, it is ridiculous that consumers have to pay nearly th amount of the cost of the physical book they already have to use the digital content with the character builder. Should they charge for it..... yeah is it fair to charge the cost of the book in some cases for it? No not really they have an option to buy just a digital copy of the book without the character builder content why not have an option for just the character builder content if you already have the physical book.
There are plenty of ways the issue could be resolved. The fact that the cost of the digital book is part of the price for the builder content is them forcing a repurchasing on people. That is the point I'm making. They don't give us enough options, and Wizards of the Coast is certainly getting a chunk of the money from this site, even if it is run by Curse.
Though I am forced to admit that the prices for the content on here have gotten significantly better than it was on day one of the live website. So perhaps the issue is already acknowledged by the company. It remains to be seen if they try to charge physical book prices here then it will truly be a problem.

While I COULD see a case being made for a builder-only option, I fail to understand your last part.
The prices have not changed since the website went live, if anything there was actually a pretty big additional discount on the 3 main books (PHB, DMG, MM) the week of launch. Prices have remained the same throughout every release, and even then they are lower than the market price WotC proposes, so, again, it is not like anyone is paying double. I'd really appreciate people trying to understand this and avoid further misinformation

Here is the deal. I run a lot of leagues and games, I’m one of those rare people that gets paid to DM. To make this more efficient I’ve purchased SEVEN PHB, two DMG, and Two MM. Including the new special edition covers that makes 8 3 and 3. I have copies of every adventure book. Having physical copies of the books is essential to what a do as most customers want to flip through them.
Im old a tad old school, But D&D beyond is fairly new all things considered. My experience is that many physical books are now coming with digital versions included. Quite frankly, they are absolutely trying to double dip. My physical book purchase doesn’t even offer me a discount on digital medium. It also seems like a hedged bet to save on costs for future publishing. I’m still debating on getting in on the big 3 for the character creator even though I feel fleeced. I just wish WotC didn’t seem so content to fleece their customers all the time. Between this and MTG’s mercilessly poor quality it’s becoming harder and harder to support this company.
