I will be going into my second campaign ever in the following month. It should be going on for a decent amount of time so I want to make a very memorable character since I wasn't very satisfied with my last idea. I was thinking maybe a full caster or a front liner, and maybe something good for roleplay? Any thoughts? help would be mightily appreciated :)
If you can't decide between front lines or full caster, several cleric domains can do both. All you need is martial weapon and/or heavy armor. War and tempest domains get both.
You could also do a wizard or sorcerer that take 1-3 levels of fighter or paladin for armor and weapon proficiencies. I like Sorcadins (sorcerer/paladin) for this, but haven't tried one yet.
I was thinking about going tempest. But I was mostly just looking for some interesting character ideas for anything, roughly for a caster or frontliner. Although tempest sounds so good :)
I made a new character that I haven't tried out yet, but I'm excited to. White Dragonborn Tempest Cleric 6/Storm Sorcerer 14. Heavy armor, a big maul, lots of lightning? He's too MAD for anyone into optimization, but I can't wait to use him.
My list of characters I sent to a player when they needed ideas (most of them use published homebrew I have made and you can find in my signature):
The links go to sample character sheets
a changling barbarian skald collecting tragic sagas of battles lost. they use their shapechange to transform into the characters while they are storytelling.
a norn shaman tunnel fighter who delves into the underdark to keep their homeland safe. Attacks have increased recently so they journey to find the source.
a kalashtar ronin rogue, who broke a taboo of their fighting school and was forced to flee. They now wander fighting for the commoner against oppression.
a kitsune eldritch hunter ranger whose lover has been poisoned by an otherworldly curse. They left their woodland home to journey to find a cure before it is too late.
an archfey tiefling arcanist sorcerer who was expected to be a great wizard but failed out of magic school. They now travel to unlock their own latent potential.
a kenku shadowbane stalker rogue that does wetwork for a temple. They are the last thing heretics and enemies of the faith see before they die.
Anything can be good for roleplay, even a front liner. I suggest figuring out your concept first, being a sentence or two why you are adventuring. And at a high level, what role you want to play (sneaky, arcane caster, pew-pew-pew, my head is made of meat, etc). It becomes pretty easy to fill in class and subclass after that.
Some of these are dependent on your group allowing UA's
A bounty hunter that specializes in hunting mages
A dragon sorcerer centaur who's equine half is draconic in appearance
A winged Tiefling paladin/dragon blood sorcerer created to be a new breed of soldier by a BBEG but was too independent (Uruk-hai inspired)
A half elf paladin who uses their charming demeanor to manipulate others in order to secretly increase their power
A Dwarven forge cleric/mountain druid who is a master of drawing metal from the earth and forging it into powerful creations
A lizardfolk knowledge cleric/thief rogue with the archaeologist background. They're actually human but a talisman discovered in an ancient temple cursed them to their current form
A halfling paladin (find steed)/beast master ranger/cavalier fighter who grew up hearing tales of knights and monsters and one day sets out in his makeshift pot and pan armor with his goat steed to become a hero (The Turnip Knight)
A human OOA paladin/Fey patron warlock who was trapped in Feywild and only escaped by making a deal with a Fey lord, it's been years for them but centuries have passed outside of the feywild
A Moon Druid/swashbuckler Rogue with the smuggler background who uses their beast shape to smuggle goods in and out of port
A Land Druid/assassin rogue from a Land of desserts who changes into cobras/scorpions to sneak in and assassinate his target
A vampire druid (plane shift ixilan) who once watched over the woodland grove that acted as a prison of an ancient vampire until the vampire was released and turned the druid. His Wild shapes are darker in nature (creatures of the night)
A female human acrobat rogue/Shadow monk who disguises herself as a young male cleric to travel freely but is actually a ninja trained by an ancient clan
A leonin Tabaxi Paladin/Bard who's very quick to boast of his own deeds and over exagerate his role (thinks he's the leader/ladies man)
A fallen Aasimar death monk/fiend or undying patron warlock. Their ancestors where cast down from the service of their god and so made a pact with that grants extended lifespans in exchange for harvested souls and so have become a family of death cult assassins
A Earth Genasi monster Hunter ranger/barbarian who hunts monsters for profit. "Sure I can kill that chimera, if you pay me" or "I've heard cockatrice gizzards sell for a pretty penny as spell components"
A bronze Dragonborn fighter/sea sorcerer who has inherited his ancestors love for war and hunts the seas for monsters and pirates
A sky elf barbarian (think Valkyrie) (ancestral guardian) cast out from her clan because the spirits of those she's slain do not pass on but follow her
A War Cleric/Valor Bard who is a master of inspiring speeches and devotional bad assery and stirs up their soldiers before charging into battle
A jaded life cleric with the soldier/mercenary background who sells their services as a healer
A Warforged artillerist artificer/storm barbarian (lightning) who's actually human but was forced to replace much of his body with automaton parts and is now more of a fantasy cyborg
A Changling old one warlock who's body is the prison of their patron and they share their mind all those who have acted as prisons before them and have forgotten their own identity
A wizard necromancer with the pirate background who's "pegleg" is the bones of their own leg animated by their magic. Their ships crew are skeletons and zombies and their familiar is a dead parrot (use Raven stats) or monkey
Goliath totem barbarian/kensei monk with the criminal background. He's covered in Japanese style tattoos of various animals and carries a Kanabo (warhammer), he was (or is) an enforcer for a Yakuza/Triad type organization
I was contemplating going storm. Yet, I was for the most part simply searching for some fascinating character thoughts for anything, generally for a caster or frontliner. In spite of the fact that storm sounds so great

Your zombie friends are useful with ‘helping’ ally’s, Carry your and your party’s items, dismantled traps for you and party, free labor to win over townsfolk , or my favorite is Disguise yourself as a zombie to hide from enemy’s(or vice versa!!!)
usefull in combat , team player, and some serious role-playing fun!
I have a female variant human wizard. Subclass is enchantment. She always wears sunglasses that have places for three eyes. She actually has three eyes. She also has two irises in each eye. The sunglasses change shape depending on her emotion. She is actually a goddess of sleep but doesn't know it. She doesn't Need to sleep.
I would maybe step back for a moment and think about how your character would solve issues or make choices.
In terms of the three pillars of play,
Socialization: How would your character try to broker a deal or extract information? Would they be very persuasive and charismatic (like a bard)? Would they be manipulative (Rogue), perhaps even using magic to charm someone (Wizard, Warlock, etc.)? Or would they just use brute force (Barbarian, Fighter)?
Exploration: How would a character infiltrate a hideout or explore a dungeon? Very stealthy and quiet (Rogue, Ranger)? Turn invisible or perhaps teleport in (Sorcerer, Wizard)? Disguise themselves as a guard (Bard, Warlock)? Or just kick in the door (Barbarian, Paladin)?
Combat: When a fight breaks out, how would you character respond? Try to remain elusive and look for opportune moments to strike (Rogue, Ranger)? Bolster their teammates abilities (Cleric, Bard)? Blast 'em or turn them into a newt (Wizard, Warlock)? Or charge the closest person with teeth bared and sword whistling (Barbarian, Fighter, etc)?
Obviously, several classes can blend together in terms of problem solving and decision making. Rogues are not the only people who can be sneaky and disarm traps. Clerics don't always have to hang back and heal. But I think imagining how your character handles each of these categories can help shape the type of character you want to play. Often, people only think through one category, like combat, and realize that the grapple-focused Barbarian they've made lacks a bit of diversity and utility when you aren't fighting.
If I ever get to play, (forever DM) I have a deep southern tortle barbarian that speaks slowly in a deep accent most of the time. When he rages he gets all high pitched and fast talking. He grew up south of (wherever) far from civilization and has been exploring the world on his own to find his pace in the world.
Edit: Subclass is totem spirit. Instead of the usual bear, wolf, etc. I flavor it as different turtles. So if he takes bear totem at 3rd level I call it tortoise and his shell gets thicker and stronger when he rages.
Well i only have halve baked ideas for various Allignments. (Sorry if something was already said, just hat to pump everything out)
Lizard folk Necromancer. Kill your victims, eat your victims, raise your victims, use your victims to make more victims. Is convinced that this is the "All Natural" way of living, hates technology.
Kobold Eldritch knight that is in love with a Dragon and try's to become a Real Knight to impress his Love. Bonus points if he is wearing a Helmet that is too big
Asimar - Paladin - Oath of Vengeance that fell in love with a Fey, thus braking the oath to never be intimate with someone + Is now outcast by the Asimar --> Fallen Asimar- Oathbraker, bonus points if he is still LG because he never changed his views on his believe's , more Bonus points when he takes the "Fey Touched" feat.
Bugbear rouge that likes to hunt Humans (or other race) with the Skulker feat. Literally a Wood Assasin that stalks Forests and lures enemy's into traps
Eladrin Druid - Crazy Wood Grandpa, that wears Animal Parts (Dear Skull Helmet, Moose Ribcage Armor, Wolf Heads as shoulder pats) and since Eladrin can Mysty step to just close in 30 ft. to you. Bonus Point for Soldier background. Constantly "at war" with something.
Warforged Monk who belives he is a Pixi, he calles himself "Beep" and uses his fists to "pet" things .... little messed up sorry
Tabaxi Babarian - Hes a Angry Cat that is close with animals but does not use any weapons other then his Claws = fast, Angry, Raging, Cat
Uncle Bob, human Clerik , Belives that healing can only accur thrue Pain (is a little sadist) He heals people with his Arcane Focus, a glowing hot Branding Iron. "Feel the PAIN Cleanse your Wounds" bonus points for making him the creepy uncle
Shieldbiter =Dragonborn Fighter with his Kobold sidekick "Chuuh" , Bonus points if Chuuh is allowed to travel in the Backpack of Shieldbiter (Chuuh belives that the Dragonborn is a Real Dragon)
Ive been mulling around this really cool idea lately about an aarakocra who had his wings ripped/burned off when his temple was invaded in the plane of air, he fell and fell and fell until he fell through a portal into the prime material plane and found shelter in an abandoned mine. he started tinkering and made some simple weaponry and armor to defend himself. he is an artificer who throws daggers and when he reaches lvl 3 he becomes an armorer. armorers power armor specifically replaces any missing limbs and functions as the limb would, so when i activate my armor i get my wings back! next step is to take thrown weapon fighting style from a feat at lvl 4 and flavour the thrown daggers as metal feathers from your wings, enchant them with repeating weapon so it magically produces the daggers and you dont miss or have to replace feathers. there was also a line in the armorer ua that said with infiltrator armor mode the armor weighed nothing and was not a hinderance, meaning an aarakocra could fly with heavy armor! that has since been corrected to adv on stealth which cancels disadv, but if you could get dm to allow medium armor, perhaps these wings are slightly stronger than you natural ones mixed with they are part of the armor itself mixed with the magic armor could be reduced weight, like mithril or something, lighter than leather and stronger than steel!
Kazakraken, what level are you starting at? While it’s nice to hear about level 20 wild builds if you are starting at level 1 you need to think simple: pick an unusual race ( maybe a genasi) then start as a fighter, ranger, or barbarian for front line capability if you want some spell capability it’s easy to add sorceror (draconic and storm are my favorites and back stories are easy) or warlock.. that gives a base for anything you want. I’m currently playing an air Genasi Fey wanderer 6/Storm sorceror 1 and having great fun. I’ll start adding sorceror levels for the next few levels. You didn’t say what your first character was and what you liked and disliked about it so it’s hard to advise other than to put out ideas that we like which may or may not be much help.

Wow! So many ideas, even for the people not asking the question! A really funny concept I came up with a while ago is a drow with arachnophobia.
