The new UA on Psionics came out, certain people don't like their plan to make Psionics be a wizard subclass and would prefer a Mystic/Psion class. Any ideas?

The plan isn't to make psionics into a wizard subclass. The subclass is just a tradittion of wizardry that studies psions. Check out Jeremy Crawford's twitter feed.
The psionic wizard subclass is to a potential psionic class what the eldtrich knight is to the wizard class; wizards aren't the only ones who get to use magic, and a psionic class won't be the only one who gets to use psionics. They're testing the waters and doing some backdoor testing on the features it seems.
The way they tried doing mystic was too complicated. If psionics get there own class, I think it should either be spell based, or select its abilities like warlocks do invocations. I don't think they should make an entirely new spellcasting like system that is still different from spellcasting.
Honestly, I think breaking it up into new subclasses for the existing classes works.
The way I personally saw Psionics used in the old days was basically "Here's this entirely different ruleset that achieves basically the same thing as the ruleset you're currently using but now everything is twice as complicated." I really liked how 4th Edition did it with everybody on the same page in terms of abilities.
Just a clarification, I didn't mean that I disliked the Wizard subclass, I liked it very much, I know it is just a wizard that studies the art of psionics, they don't own it, but the DnDBeyond video with Jeremy Crawford about this Wizard Subclass made it seem like for now their current plan is not to build a Mystic/Psion class, and make it more about subclasses. It just seems like for now they're putting a pause on a Psionic class, and if they do make it, it will be spell-based. I wouldn't like this to happen, and would prefer a different psionic system that scales similarly to spellcasting, but doesn't use it.

Old psionics was rife with abuse from my personal experiences. I would prefer that the psionics works the same as magic for rules sake. 3e had a lot of "psionics are the same as magic but better" feel to them. Can't be counter spelled and lots of them just bypassed most protections. Was difficult for me to deal with back in the day. I am personally fine with them keeping it to subclasses entirely.

"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."

I am fine with the subclasses existing, I just don't want them to be all that there is. I would like a different Psionic system for those of us who want one.

Yeah! This happened to me! My very first experience with Psionics was just one guy at the table with a Wizard++ locking down every combat and social encounter until the whole game was all about him. Wasn't fun.
I love the idea of psychic adventurers with a special subsystem, but they should play by the same rules as everybody else.
We're not going to see a "psi points" system. Or if we do, it'll be used to fuel spells.
I wasn't around on forums and such when the Mystic was released, but as I recall the basic opinion of it is that while the class is much beloved for "it was my favorite in 3.5e!" reasons, it was also wildly overpowered and difficult to get a solid grip on quickly, due to being over thirty pages of one new class. That's anathema to the core 5e design philosophy of "if it isn't absolutely required, get rid of it".
There will not be a complete separate spellcasting system for psionics. The new UA psionics document proves that, with its slew of "prototype" psionic-flavored spells. A full-up psionic class may gain access to these spells in a different way, and I recall someone mentioning something about reproducing psionic talents/"stances" with concentration cantrips, which is an idea I personally find very interesting and can see a lot of design room opening up from.
But people who want their psionic characters to be magicless mages, with undefeatable spells that require no components or costs, might be in for frustration. I very much understand wanting a sharp delineation between "magic" and "psychic power" - that delineation is extremely strong in a lot of my own non-D&D writing and it feels super weird to have mentalist abilities be "magic", no different from any other random spell.
But in terms of game mechanics, it just doesn't work.

I don’t mind Psionics being “Magic”, but I do not agree with Psionic Specials being “Spells”.
