Hello! I need help making a Wizard character that I will use for Curse of Strahd. I am having a hard time coming up with a concept/theme for my character. I tend to like more of the funny and light-hearted characters. Does anyone have any concepts or any ways that they come up with their DND characters?
First I pick a class, then I pick a race, then I pick a background to complement that combo. Then I write the backstory to suit that character.
I would warn you, as I understand it, Wizards really suffer in CoS because they basically need every scrap of gold the whole party gets just to keep transcribing spells because of how scarce gold is in that Adventure.

This is how I do it too. I decide what the character is, then I determine how the character got to where he starts.
How do you envision playing your wizard? Do you view him as a blaster? More of a control type character? What races do you like? I'm personally an elf guy, so if I were making a pure wizard, I'd likely pick high elf. A lot of folks hate those pointy eared dandies though, and prefer something edgier, like say a tiefling. Funny and light-hearted to me says gnome (one of the best mechanical wizard races too) although I'm not a big fan of gnomes personally.
How you envision playing him is going to be important for determining your concept. With wizards, you have enormous flexibility in your spells...it's /the/ class for someone who can't pick a theme and sit still with it since you can change your load out of spells and playstyle every session. As Sposta mentions though, there's a price for that in gold, and if you're not certain you're going to be able to scribe your spells you might be frustrated with a wizard.
I will say that light-hearted and funny generally doesn't go well thematically with CoS...that's supposed to be more of dark, horror game. However, if that's what you want, to me it says control type spells...which may or may not be as useful vs undead. Illusions, things like Tasha's Uncontrolable Hideous Laughter are probably going to be your go-to spells.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
If you want lighthearted and funny, maybe think about a Bard. They’re fantastic casters for a controller like crzyhawk suggests, they don’t have the drawback of transcriptions, and if you go Lore Bard, it can really lend itself to a researcher type character to give the feel of a Wizard. Just a thought.
