Am I crazy, or was there once a half-ogre player race in 1st or 2nd Ed. I am want to make a "Mongo" type character, maybe a half-ogre bard who plays the cowbell. I don't want to make an overpowered character though..any thoughts
Half-ogres were a monstrous character race option in 2nd Edition. For 5E, I'd just used the stats for an Eberron or Wildmont orc but give them Giant as their racial language instead of orcish.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Ikram Sahir ibn Malik al-Sayyid Ra'ad, Second Son of the House of Ra'ad, Defender of the Burning Sands. Lvl 9 Brass Dragonborn Sorcerer + Greater Fire Elemental Devil.

Not bad suggestions but, I would say the Volo Orc is a better fit for somewhat dim-witted Ogre variants.

I prefer the Goliath as a “counts as” for Ogrillon (Half-Ogres).

Last Half-Ogre played in one of my 5E party was reflavored Goliath with a minor tweak
Half-ogres were the offspring of a human and an ogre. Some half-ogres rise to become proud chiefs of ogre tribes, their human blood giving them an edge over their full-blooded ogre rivals. Some venture into the world to prove their worth among humans and other more civilized races. Many of these become adventurers, achieving greatness for their mighty deeds and notoriety for their barbaric customs and savage fury. A half-ogre's skin tone ranged from pale yellow to dull brown or even gray or black.
Half-ogre Traits
Half-ogres share a number of traits in common with each other.
Ability Score Increase Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.
Age Half-ogres have lifespans comparable to humans. They enter adulthood in their late teens and usually live less than a century.
Alignment Half-ogres inherit a tendency toward chaos from their ogre parents and are not strongly inclined toward good. Half-ogres raised among ogres and willing to live out their lives among them are usually evil..
Size Half-ogres are between 7 and 8 feet tall and weigh between 320 and 410 pounds. Your size is Medium.
Speed Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Menacing You gain proficiency in the Intimidation skill.
Ogre Endurance You can focus yourself to occasionally shrug off injury. When you take damage, you can use your reaction to roll a d12. Add your Constitution modifier to the number rolled and reduce the damage by that total. After you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Powerful Build You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
Darkvision Thanks to your ogre blood, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it waere bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't dicern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Languages You can speak, read, and write Common and Giant.
