I agree with you Third. From what I am hearing I could make a bard and be just as effective with any race, Half-Elf to Half-Orc. That sort of washes all the color out of the game. And if they give everyone three +1 ASI bonus at character creation but Dwarves get an extra d10 for HP, then why not play a dwarf instead of an Elf?
The only reason I can think of is Elven accuracy. Which, although it is seriously broken, is a s***ty reason
It's pretty insanely powerful. I don't know if it would be in the next edition, and it would probably change if it is.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
I wouldn't mind the option of each race having the core features, and then optional features you choose at creation. Kind of like how the sub-races give you different features from the base race.
So lets say you wanted to play a dragonborn. You could go with the standard Breath weapon option. Or you could choose the Dragon Fear power from the XGE as a racial feature. Or maybe a bite attack that does a little extra elemental damage based on the dragon ancestry you took. You could only choose one of these options at creation. For the next racial feature, you could choose the standard elemental resistance. Or you could take Natural armor (13+dex mod). You pick one or the other.
I feel like this would give players so many more customization options.
That could be cool, but they would have to give a lore reason for that, like how there are variant humans, half-elves, and other races in Eberron with Dragonmarks, or two subraces of Dragonborn in Exandria.

This is sorta similar to the thing that EN World is doing for their 5.5e. If anyone hasn't seen it, I'd check out the lineage system. It is very interesting, if very complex.

I don't think that would be too hard to accomplish. The flavor text of the race could simply read that each dragonborn manifest a bit of their draconic ancestry in different ways. Some are able to exhale a stream of elemental fury, others can't manifest it as strongly but their saliva holds a small amount of that elemental power which can harm their enemies if bitten and others can mimic a weaker version of a dragon's frightful presence.
Grant it that might be too handwavy for people's tastes.
Also, not every trait has to be interchangeable. Some can still be static for the race across the board.

Yeah, I would probably keep resistance to damage as the static trait, and the breath weapon, natural armor, claws, and others would be customizable.
Maybe that could be accomplished with subraces, though.

"Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for thou art crunchy and taste good with ketchup."
FYI the actual rules state that you cannot use a skill to make a check that you are proficient in to make a check. Instead you make an ability check at the DM's discretion.
In the DnD Beyond character sheets this makes no difference as any skill you are not proficient in just show up as the ability mod associated with that skill.
For example:
Barbarian wants to roll to see if they have ever heard tale of a dragon. They do not have proficiency in History. They have an INT of 8 for a mod of -1. In the sheet History is shown as a -1. The DM could ask them to roll a straight Intelligence check which would be at a -1.
Both rolls will be at a -1 so its kind of pointless to just ask for the ability check.
I do not think the design intent would be to never allow a barbarian to roll an Intelligence check to see if they remember something as honestly that's pretty boring.
In the next edition I want people to not be asking what do you want in the next edition, as well as not asking when is the next edition.
None of us in this thread have asked when the next edition is, and if you don't like the concept of the thread, don't comment. This is off topic and not constructive. As I warned earlier in the thread, posts such as this will be reported for being off topic.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
I answered once before but i decided id like to clarify and ad some more things to what i had suggested in my earlier post.
Things id like to see in either a new edition or in a future rulebook
1. options for a disabled character, ie rules to play a blind character or an amputee. I mean id like to play a blind swordsman like Zatoichi or the lone wolf from Sekiro. I do know that there was an UA for magical prosthetic limbs but who knows if that will ever be official but if it ever is, its a magic item that requires attunement and is something that wouldnt be readily available to a starting low level character
2. weapons or feats that bolster unarmed strike or natural weapons. I mean come on brass knuckles are an actual thing and i for the life of me can not fathom the reason that either of these options are not able to have the finesse weapon option
3. rules for monk flurry of blows using monk weapons instead of unarmed strikes. I have watched enough anime and martial arts movies to see monks/other martial artists attacking in a flurry of blows using a sword, spear or other weapons.
4. rules for an actual spell less ranger or new ranger spells for a melee ranger.

The prosthetic limb is already an official magic item, as well as the arcane propulsion arm. The prosthetic limb is readily available in Eberron, for Artificers, and in a few other campaign settings, like Ravnica, and maybe Exandria. I would like more options for playing disabled characters, though.
I would like brass knuckles and more unarmed strike options, but we don't really need a new edition for that. The Class Feature Variants Unearthed Arcana had an Unarmed Fighting Style that will probably come out in TCoE.
That would be OP as currently written, unless you have a subclass or feat that allows this while taking more Ki points.
We don't really need a new edition for that. This thread may be better for most of these recommendations.

5e is built on community feedback. This is basically a question about how would you perfect 5e.
This actually makes me curious of where you can give said feedback. Here (as in D&DBeyond), or elsewhere?
Elsewhere. This website is not owned by the company that actually makes D&D. That company is WotC, and their website for D&D is here:
Lol, I was just coming back to edit my question, as I realized how silly it sounded. I know WotC makes D&D (been in the D&D world since 3/3.5e) and this site isn't owned by WotC--but I asked because I thought maybe they checked it, since a lot of gamers use it, and it's a popular platform now, and companies will often check various platforms to see what people are saying. I figured their official site might be the best place, but they got rid of their forums a while ago, so I wasn't sure.
WotC at least annual solicits broad D&D feedback from a the community in the form of a survey. Most recent one was this summer. Whenever you see UA showing up here, it's been on the WotC website for a while, and they always survey those too. I'm not sure how the community input in the development of 5e was done, but someone who was paying attention when 5e was a work in progress called D&DNext can probably fill this thread in.
While I imagine forums are perused at least casually, I don't believe WotC has ever set up an actual community-engaging official presence on this or reddit or ENWorld (the three largest D&D forums I can think of). Maybe an AMA on Reddit. They do maintain the usual social media channels most entertainment producers do these days, and have engaged community through them. Also at events like Celebration, where community members can ask designers questions through a moderator, I'm pretty sure someone's paying attention to what questions are being asked.
