Can you use Animating Performance to animate the object you created with your Performance of Creation?
Performance of creation says you create a non-magic item but that it glows and you can hear music when you touch it. But... no mention of if this created item is itself magical or not.
Animating Performance animates a "nonmagical" item.
I think they should work in synergy RAW, but I'm not sure RAI since the created item is described in a way that makes it seem magical.
It's a bit ambiguous, but I would rule that the created item should be magical by nature, so wouldn't be eligible for Animating Performance by RAW. However, the only significant consequence of allowing it to be animated is that it would overcome damage resistance.
That said, Performance of Creation is explicitly allowed to create items that can be used as Material Components, which is new territory for this type of effect. So, given that, I would lean in the player's favor. Counting it as non-magical for the purpose of magical effects. Though subject to dispel magic and anti-magic fields.
However, the only significant consequence of allowing it to be animated is that it would overcome damage resistance.
The Dancing Item does force damage anyway, so there is no consequence.
I always saw this as intentional synergy. You can't always rely on a canoe to just be lying around every time you feel like beating someone with a canoe.
But seriously, there's no reason to not let this work. It makes the class more fun but not any more powerful.
Unless the DM deliberately drops the party naked into the middle of the ocean, it's almost guaranteed that something will be around to animate, it's just a matter of what form it takes.
Also at 3rd level, as an action, you can channel the magic of the Song of Creation to create one nonmagical item of your choice in an unoccupied space within 10 feet of you
Animating Performance reads:
By 6th level, as an action, you can target a Large or smaller nonmagical item you can see within 30 feet of you and animate it.
Though the performance of creation is a magical means of creation, the item itself is non-magical and thus can be targeted by animating performance. It's pretty clear RAW Imo.
I disagree. The song of creation says you use magic, it's fueled by spell slots, and the object has properties that can't be explained without magic. The text you cited is telling you that you can't create a magic item (for example, a Bag of Holding) using that feature, not that the resultant object is nonmagical.
That's my interpretation, anyway.
Though, it hardly matters.
