I think your best bet is homebrew - unless you're looking for a spell to let a player hide an island. I'm assuming that this is a plot device and as such it transcends the boundaries of the magic rules - you should just make it work.
An alternative, to work within the boundaries of the existing magic spells - how can you hide an island in real life? if you're stood a distance away (as I assume people will be), you can cover it with your hand and boom, it's hidden from your view. So now have an obelisk in the middle of the island, which projects an illusion spell in between the observer and the island which simply hides the island from their view. The obelisk can simple cast the illusion spell infinite times to either form an illusion for each person looking that way, or to make a dome of illusion over the island.
Having the illusion projected somewhere near to the players would be a cool option as they might catch vague glimpses of the island when they cast any dispel magic spells, and this can foreshadow whatever events you have planned involving this island.
Yeah I think as the kind of magic required would be very powerful and specific this might be moving into the realm of homebrew. Or alternatively allow it to be visible but make it hard to access.
That could work to hide it completely. I was thinking more along the lines of hiding it from outside viewers but not from those on the island.
I was thinking the island was uninhabited, mirage arcane might be a bit too powerful, as the mirage is tactile people of the island would fall into the water when it is cast, presumably making them at risk of drowning but that is a DM call.
Hallucinatory Terrainmight be a better effect but at 150ft cube is rather small. You could homebrew that when cast at higher levels it covers a larger area
There is no spell in the game that will do what you want. Consider how much terrain a 4th level spell Hallucinatory Terrain covers: a 150 foot cube. Now, there is nothing that a DM handwave could not solve. You could suggest that some wizard created a more powerful version of that spell, say a 9th level version, that covers a much larger area, and that spell and wizard are lost in the annals of history. There would be some precedent for scaling the spell up. Fog Cloud at 9th level covers a 180 foot radius when upcast to a 9th level spell.
But there is no RAW that will get you where you want to go.
It would be incrediblyexpensive and time consuming to set up, but multiple layers of Programmed Illusion might be able do the trick. For each 30 foot cube, you would need three castings in order to create a seamless 15 minute loop.
Once set up, though, it would be permanent and require zero upkeep.
Are you a DM or player? If you're a DM then the magic spell you're looking for is called "This-island-is-hidden-by-magic". The spell takes effect as soon as you say it and lasts as long as you need it to.
For this campaign I am a player so it would be something to propose to my DM. So at this stage I have decided to skip the hidden concept as I think it would just require homebrew or the waving of the DMs hand and saying 'hocus pocus etc'.
Hi Guys,
I need to conceal a large island using magic and I am having trouble finding a spell that would cover a large area of land.
The only thing I have found that sort of does it is ‘Control Weather’ for a 10 mile radius for 8 hours: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/control-weather
Any tips?
Cheers.
How about Mirage Arcane to make it look like ocean,

Thanks for your contributions so far.
Just move it to another dimension with a portal maybe....

I'm not sure why no one has said this, but I'd think a properly-worded Wish would do the trick.
WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
Players can access the same handwavey magic the DM can, it just needs to be granted to them. Sounds like a quest to me!
