OR, just maybe, you could look at the new spells, realize that the changes are all common sense, THAT THEY'RE FREE, and just use them!
Seriously, you want to use Guidance as an action still, or Witch Bolt with a 30ft range? Why?
Like they bloody fixed True Strike! Why should they keep the old broken version?
Heck, by rewriting the spell section ones, they're likely preventing a larger amount of things from breaking during rollout as the links shouldn't need updating for as many tooltips.
Of all the hills to die on, old spell versions is a particularly bizarre one. It'd be one thing if we were actually being forced to buy the spells if they had gotten rid of SRD spells, but they've literally declared that anything that was SRD from 2014 edition of PHB will be SRD in the 2024 edition.
It has been stated before, but the reason people want the old spells and tooltips is because people are playing their current campaigns with it and don't want to have updated rules that might break or imbalance the game. Yes new spells are fun and exciting, and fixing old problems to make them usable is a good thing, but it takes the control out of the user; something DND players and DMs hate. It is basically getting railroaded in a campaign; except this campaign has been going on for years and this DM just got a new personality that thinks railroading is fun.
It's easy enough to make a copy of the two dozens or so 2014 PHB spells that function differently from the 2024 PHB versions.
To continue using the 2014 rules going forward:
Every subclass that grants spells needs to be homebrewed
Every item that grants spells needs to be homebrewed
Every warlock invocation that grants spells - these cannot be homebrewed and will not be usable with 2014 rules
Every class that grants extra spells (mainly through the Tashas expanded spell lists) - as far as I know these also cannot be homebrewed so will be unusable.
Every monster that casts spells will need to be homebrewed
It's not easy. It's impossible to homebrew fix all the content they are removing and outright breaking with this update. It's delibrate phasing out of all the older books that are tied to the 2014 rules, spells and class features while telling us to go fix it ourselves using homebrew.
Many of us paid for dndbeyond tool access to all this content across muiltiply books over the last few years. I own almost every digital book on this site to make charactor creation on dndbeyond as fluid and inclusive as possible for myself and all my friends. I paid for no hassle access to all the charactor options and tools for 5e based on the 2014 rules set. If you go to any book in the new marketplace the character builder is the first thing listed under "Beyond Unlocks" They are removing access to all this content for the dndbeyond digital tool set. They are TAKING AWAY content I specifically paid a lot of money for and telling me to create it myself.
It's extremely insulting to everyone whose bought these digital books to have their content removed and to be told by wlto/dndbeyond that we need to fix it ourselves when it simply isn't possible to fix the impact of these changes across muiltiply sub classes and we PAID for this content already!
When buying the 2014 compatible books that contain these spells and subclasses it clearly states "Purchasing a digital copy of this book unlocks it for use in the D&D BEYOND compendium and toolset. D&D BEYOND is the official digital toolset for DUNGEONS & DRAGONS" Considering they are removing that while still selling books advertising it its now false advertising.
This is the listing below for the players handbook. Under dndbeyond toolkit unlocks it shows 350 spells amoung other features for our charactor sheets.
OR, just maybe, you could look at the new spells, realize that the changes are all common sense, THAT THEY'RE FREE, and just use them!

Because the players make the game, not WOTC, and clearly whoever made this decision has never used their own tool or played a DND game.
When will companies learn to give people choices and options and let them decide how they want to play instead of forcing it upon them.
This isn't an MMO where everybody needs to play the same version of the game to ensure balance. DnD and DnDBeyond are like a game engine, and each individual campaign is like it's own game. And every campaign is different. Whether you use the shitty old version of True Strike or the new and improved version shouldn't be up to some exec in their ivory tower but up to each individual group and the tools should accommodate that, because that's what was advertised and that's what people paid for.
So how do I get my money back for the new books? I won't be using this site or app, if there's no toggle for 2014 spells/magic items in the character sheets.
You're clearly not thinking about your players/customers AT ALL of you think this is a good idea.
Almost no one uses dndbeyond for the compendium, and having the 2014 versions of the spells etc. only in there and not being able to use them in the character sheets is a highway robbery. And someone mentioned that your solution for this is homebrew? Okay! So you're going to make using homebrew free now? Because last I checked you can only use it if you pay for a subscription! And I PAID for this shit ALREADY AND NOW YOU'RE TRYING TO MAKE ME PAY MORE? No thanks! I want my money back.
Can you say, explicitly and with no room for confusion, whether or not I can add a 2014 spell to my character sheet with these new rules? Will the 2024 version of a magic item be the only version that I can see on my sheet, meaning I would need to look through the 2014 compendium for the mechanics I would prefer to use, or will there be a Legacy/Current toggle that allows me to choose which version I add (and it just *defaults* to the current one)? Even if I have access to the old versions of the compendium, will I still need to follow the original advice of making a homebrew version just so I can add it to a character sheet (where I am much more likely to look it up)?
Having access to a game mechanic does not guarantee that you can actually use it the way you want to, and at this point I don't want any vagueness or points of ambiguity.
Using the character builder itself you will have no access to 2014 spells on new or existing characters. Old characters will have their spells replaced with the new versions whether you want them or not.
If you are willing to spend a lot of time with the homebrew tools it is possible to restore them in *some* cases. We have found (and continue to find) many cases where they cannot be restored. See post 429 for more detailed information.
I genuinely don’t care about anything other than accessing the content I choose to access on mine and my player’s character sheets.
I’ve been a loyal subscriber for years and taught our players on dndbeyond, but it isn’t worth it if I can’t use the content I’ve already paid for.
If I want to purchase and use 2024 content, I will when I’m ready. Make a stinking toggle option instead of assuming anyone wants these updates pushed upon them. I already spend enough time on game prep and researching in game to adjudicate rules - why should we also have to waste time add homebrew spells that ALREADY EXIST IN YOUR SITE or refer back to a search for this content? Just absolute idiocy and laziness.
Please just leave our character sheets alone unless we opt in to using your new rules. This is ridiculous, everyone is downloading their sheets rn because of this.
this is disappointing and frustrating. I don't want to swap rules mid campaign. I DM and play, so do I now need to spend HOURS homebrewing EVERY spell and magic item? That's not a constructive solution. some way to switch between would be better.
"Better" is subjective. This may make it "better" for you, but to those of us who are realizing that all the money we've spent and purchases we've made on DnD Beyond are about to go to waste because there is a new system and WOTC/DnD wants more of our money. That (let's be honest) we were probably going to give them anyway. This is a slap in the face, you can call it "better" because they are going us a flower afterwards but they still slapped us in the face.
How is it better for me? Something is better than nothing... objectively. You are not getting something where you previously were getting nothing. If something is not better than nothing, don't use the site at all. It's all the same to you.
I'm gonna break into your house and steal your TV, it's okay though, I'm leaving a free turd on your doorstep. This free turd is objectively better than nothing.
The more accurate analogy is stealing my broken, 10 year old television and leaving a brand new, $5,000 television behind. Which, yes, would be objectively better than nothing.
I think a better analogy would be WotC handing us a shit pie. when we got upset about the pie, they handed everyone a side of peanuts. You like the peanuts, good for you. However for those of us who have problems with peanuts, it doesn't improve the situation.

It is not a better analogy because yours deals with like/not like/preferences/and feelings. All of which are beyond the bounds of any of my discussions here. Don’t like it all you want.

This does nothing to address my post. I have been very clear on my position and others, yourself included, continue to invite me back to the conversation. If you don’t want me here, the least you can do is stop tagging me.
I am free to post my opinions here too though. This is not just a soundboard for rage. I have added to the conversation. It just is not a contribution that you value, which you are free to not approve of. If I wanted approval, I would be bullying, which seems to be very popular here.
My statement is only that the changes have cleared up a lot of confusion and put to bed a lot of anger, disappointment, and anxiety for some. Others don’t feel that way and that is completely valid too. I am not disputing or challenging the validity of feelings. I am disputing claims of fact that, in my observation, are incorrect.
Good afternoon, Sarah, and thank you for clarifying some things on the changes to the compendium.
As a longtime customer on D&DBeyond, and a frequent player of this game, I have been repeatedly disappointed in the lack of foresight with decisions made for this game, specifically for how it is handled on D&DBeyond. I was one of the few people who pre-ordered the Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen digital and physical bundle, and was surprised to see a difference between my print Lunar Sorcery subclass and my digital Lunar Sorcery subclass, on the first day of pre-order access. This is but one example.
As a point of transparency, I cancelled my subscription to D&DBeyond when the OGL Debacle took place. I have not looked back since, as I realized the idiocy of spending my money on digital products and tools that I do not own and cannot control in any way. The course of action you are now taking regarding the 2024 rules is exactly the reason I stopped purchasing content here.
When you purchase a product on D&DBeyond, the product description always gave a description inclusion of something along the lines of "for use in the D&DBeyond Compendium and the D&DBeyond Character Creator". Now, I do not see that, as it has been removed. Regardless, that was a promise made to your customers that the content in those books, whether you decide to make a new version in a new book or not, would be usable in those tools.
The decision to essentially force those who still make use of your site to update certain things to your preferences or be forced to find a work around to use them with the tools they were promised they worked with in the first place, is exactly why people like me are stepping away from your tools and products entirely.
Please correct this mistake. This is but another step that will further the divide between your company and your customers. A simple solution to this is to offer the same free updates to people, but allow for 2014 versions to still be accessible in the character creator with a "Legacy" tag. Taking content away will never be the right decision.
We appreciate the level of transparency hat you are offering to the community at this time. Please appreciate the feedback being given, and take it into consideration, so a mistake is not made that further hurts the brand.

Dude, I accept that YOU are fine with the changes and that they won't affect you. I'm happy for you, truly. But you continue on and on dismissive of the FACT not opinion, that these changes negatively impact hundreds if not thousands of other players, and thus are not in fact good. A good change would be to update to the 2024 edition as planned, and have all of the changed spells and items flagged as Legacy, so that people that have not or choose not to use the 2024 edition rules can do so without interruption. That WOULD be in fact good. Can that be explained to you any better? Can you understand and accept that your thoughts on this are not the only acceptable ones?
So if someone showed up to your house took your ps5 and handed you a bag of poop is that better than if they just took it
If spells and magic items are the PS5 here, then it is more accurate to say that someone took my PS5 and left me a PS6. So, yes, that would be better. For this analogy to fully work though, we would have to say that when you bought the PS5, you agreed that Sony could come at any time and give you a PS6, or give you nothing at all. That is what you agreed to when you purchased spells and magic items here.
You may not like the PS6 and it may not work with your current TV without you buying an adapter or you doing some other workaround, but having a PS6 is better than them simply taking the PS5 and giving nothing at all, which is the extend of my argument here.
I think a better analogy would be WotC handing us a shit pie. when we got upset about the pie, they handed everyone a side of peanuts. You like the peanuts, good for you. However for those of us who have problems with peanuts, it doesn't improve the situation.

Impact or disruption to players os beyond the scope of my argument, which you would know if you were really trying to understand my position here. Good, not good, bad, terrible… these are all things that are separate from anything I have discussed.
I have repeatedly stated that yours and many others feelings are valid and acceptable. In fact, the very post you are responding to here states that. Did you read it?
For those arguing that the 2024 spells, etc are improvements - that may be - HOWEVER, I can think of no better way of getting the typical D&D Player to reject something than by forcing it upon them. WOTC emphasized that this new edition (what is it actually called? I've been using 2024 vs 2014, because that's easy to understand) would be "backwards compatible", but that means you can use your existing characters/campaign without change if you choose. D&D Beyond is saying that our existing characters/campaign will be changed without choice. That's compulsion - a 4-th level bard spell used against enemies. After spending hundreds of $$$$ on D&D Beyond, why do they now consider us an enemy to be controlled?
HOWEVER, I can think of no better way of getting the typical D&D Player to reject something than by forcing it upon them.
One of my best friends and roommates worked tech service phone lines for Apple during the whole "we just gave you all U2's Album for free!"
You'd never believe how many people called in furious over being given some music they didn't have to pay for, demanding to know how to delete it from their phones.
I don't think it's fair to call the guy a troll. He's just trying to defend his position when everyone's coming for him. That being said, he's already said if people stop tagging him he'd stop commenting so "not feeding" the guy is the obvious answer.

One of my best friends and roommates worked tech service phone lines for Apple during the whole "we just gave you all U2's Album for free!"
You'd never believe how many people called in furious over being given some music they didn't have to pay for, demanding to know how to delete it from their phones.
I'm fascinated to see what the next official post on this topic will include.
Cancelled my subscription earlier today. Been subbed for five years, with a full library.
I don't think it's fair to call the guy a troll. He's just trying to defend his position when everyone's coming for him. That being said, he's already said if people stop tagging him he'd stop commenting so "not feeding" the guy is the obvious answer.
