Newspapers across the world has this article and I wonder are you are brave enough to join the expedition.
The setting is Earth in the 1920's and this will be a low magic adventure where magic is the stuff of fiction or is it? Know that magic is extremely rare and producing magic in public may have unintended consequences. I mean spell casters are Gandalf rare. There are guns of different variety and grenades. So if you want to be a 1 person army, go for it.
The adventure has a bit more drops of role play and mystery, though there is still combat.
Prefer classes with less magic though there is no ban on full casters. Critical role classes and subclasses are allowed as well.
Limited races - Humans and races that can pass as human. Such as Dwarves, Gnomes, Halflings, Kalashtar
Level 3 and use 150 gp in lieu of starting equipment to kit your character the way you want.
Posting Frequency: At least 1 per day, though posting more often is very welcome

For the occupation you can decide what does your character do day to day. Even though you may be a rogue, you could be a plumber during the day.

playing Jin Wei, human (Kara-tur) way of the Four Elements Monk in the Princes of the Apocalypse
I'm not going to be able to play, but I could not possibly let this go by without making a character just for the fun of it! Anyone else is certainly welcome to take this idea (in part or in whole) and make it their own!
Name: Howard Phillips
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Wizard 2 (Runecraft, if allowed, or Abjuration) / Warlock 1 (Great Old One & eventually Pact of the Tome)
Occupation: Author
Brief Backstory:
The son of a once affluent family, Howard lost his father at a young age when the man was institutionalized. He would remain locked in asylums for the rest of his life, ranting about the creatures who live in the shadows. Howard and his mother went to live with her father, the source of their family's money. Howard's grandfather was very fond of the boy and ensured that he received the very best education and indulged even his most eccentric and esoteric interests.
It was probably the failure of his businesses that lead to Howard's grandfather's stroke. Robbed of her husband, her father, and her financial security, Howard's distraught mother vanished. It was whispered in polite circles that, unable to go on, she had thrown herself into the river and drowned but no body was ever found.
Left on his own, with a classical education but little in the way of practical skills, Howard makes ends meet by living a modest life as an author. In his spare time he continues to pursue his obsessive interest in all things paranormal and arcane...
Appearance: Howard Phillips is a tall, thin man with a long face, high brow, thin mouth, and haunted eyes. His preference for dark, formal clothing and grim countenance gives him the air of an undertaker.
Character Sheet: N/A (not actually submitting a character)
I might submit a character later, but I'm not sure if I want to commit yet. I'm thinking of making a stage magician/occultist, but I can't decide between a Rune Knight with Ritual Caster (via variant human) and an Arcane Trickster.

Name:James Devereaux Race: Human (Variant) Class: Rogue (Inquisitor) Occupation: Dilettante (Noble) Backstory: Growing up within british aristocracy with the finest boarding schools and later at Oxford Law, young James' father was nothing less than furious when he decided to enter the british army to fight in the Great War. Surviving the horrors of Somme where many minds were shattered and even more lives lost, James came out with no more than an disfiguring scar, but more importantly to him, an addiction to the thrill of looking death in the eye. After spending a few years back home trying to return to a normal life, James has realized he needs the thrill, needs the adventure, and as the planned Larkin expedition reaches his attention he immediately decides to use his considerable funds to back it with expectations to be allowed to come along, his antcipation growing with the prospect of facing the thrill of adventure once more.
Haha, true that. I think we have a lot of hp Lovecraft fans too with all the old one warlocks. For the record my guy punches people (or shoots them with his revovler) and knows nothing about magic. He just "found" a sword that's like "Hey. Go to peru." Curious to see what this'll lead to.
Ahahahaha! I missed that. I try not to read other's submissions too much incase they have info in the submission that my character wouldn't have. Love that you are actually playing HP Lovecraft! Or well, letting others play them? Brilliant
Well, inspired by Lovecraft. In retrospect, he should probably have College of Lore Bard in place of Wizard, then swap Half-Elf for Variant Human with the ritual caster feat.🤔

Name: Fred Jansen Race: Human Class: Fighter (Battlemaster Brawler) Occupation: Explorer/Cartographer Brief Backstory: Fred's personality and drive to explore can't be contained by polite society, as has become clear to him throughout his life. After bouncing around in various careers, that often ended in his dismissal, he found at least occasional employment working for a cartography company, mapping new places and areas, and he found he had a knack for recalling the layout of terrain and being able to sketch it and communicate it to the stuffy folks who never left the guildhall. His travels on behalf of the company took him all over, providing the first glimpse many might have of distant lands. It helped that he could hold is own on the rough frontiers of exploration, the same hands that could hold a pen and deftly mark the boundaries of coast, river and mountain could also set aside those more delicate pursuits and bloody a nose or box an ear as needed. The rough and tumble of exploring and mapping suits him just fine, and when there aren't jobs to be done, he finds work as a bouncer at some of the seedier establishments, preferably one where his services are almost certainly needed on a nightly basis.
Well, well, well... I think this guy will fit (he may pick up a revolver and/or rifle in Lima if the DM allows; I wasn't sure of their cost.)
NAME: Edward Clayton (aka "The Amazing Echo") RACE: Variant Human CLASS: Fighter 3 (Psi Warrior) OCCUPATION: Stage Performer (Trickshot) CHARACTER SHEET:https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/104103481/YEGGnY BACKSTORY:
The 2nd son and fourth child of a successful world traveler and archeologist, Edward and his siblings were given a broad education. Edward in particular, along with the basics, was trained from an early age in a variety of weapons and fighting styles from around the world. With his smaller frame and quiet demeanor, the boy eventually specialized in ranged weapons, including firearms, but resented the strict life path that his father had laid out for him. Once of age, he ran from home, using his honed skills--and growing psionic power, which he kept secret--to find a position as a trickshot with a small traveling circus troupe.
It was a fun and educational (if poor and difficult) three years where he finally managed to open up to new friends before disaster struck... one night a fire in their tents ended the lives of over half the troupe, and unable to move on, the group disbanded. Now having found an expedition that has piqued his interest, Edward has decided to take his skills (and modest stage flair) to Lima, where--hopefully--adventure awaits.
Name: Robert Smith Race: half orc (looks very human, more prominent lower canines, but not enough to cause suspicion, can change to another race, V human or scourge aasimar maybe if this isnt allowed) Class: zealot barbarian Occupation: blacksmith (primarily decorative pieces but sometimes more functional tools and such) and mad priest in his off time Brief Backstory: (sorry about the run-on sentences)
born to a long line of smiths (both in name, and profession) Robert was taught the craft but when he showed a lack of interest, his family allowed him to pursue other options, he tried many things, baker(a disaster), farmhand (not bad work but the pay was terrible), porter (terrible), and fisherman's help (not bad actually he quite enjoyed this one, it just wasn't a career for him), to name a few. before falling in with a cult of Caphriel, supposedly an archangel of unknown origins who keeps the world safe from magical incursions. when his father fell ill robert returned to blacksmithing to keep the family smithy running, he has since stuck with it, while also promoting worship of Caphriel whenever the chance presents. when he found the ad in the papers he prayed to Caphriel about it and when a commission for a decorative, yet functional, war-axe fell through he took that, and a general increase of birds and decrease of interest in smithing in the area as a portent he should join this Augustus Larking on his journey. packing what he felt was necessary for a journey, then what he felt would be useful for exploring, and finally what he felt could come in handy for surviving traps, and a few knickknacks of course, he prepared, spending much of the money from previous commissions. then, closing up the forge, he set out to make his fortune.

This Mug immediately shared with me a transcendental tale of an Infinite Mug that anchors the Universe and keeps it from folding in on itself. I filed this report under "illogical nonsense" and asked why its sign is in Times New Roman font, when it is basic knowledge that Arial Black is a far superior font. I wondered: How did this mug even get past the assembly line with its theistic beliefs and poor font choices?

Name: Orlando Arsenau Race: Human (variant) Class: Ranger(1)/Fighter(2) Occupation: Mountaineer Brief Backstory: Orlando Arsenau inherited the interest of climbing and exploring from both his parents who met by chance on a short expedition into the Andes. He went on many hikes with both of them and learned the value of a good pair of boots very early in his life. The outdoors was almost more of a home than the Tents they often pitched in fields and forests. The family was always on the move from one spot to the other. This meant Orlando missed out on education but instead learnded many life lessons and how to tie any knot in a few secons. Now he travells sepparate from his parents who with age are no longer able to participate in excursions as they used to. Orlando has one goal in mind that drives him: The summit of Mount everest. Though until that he has lots to train and money to save. Because of that he takes the opportunity to assist the Larkin Expedition without hesitation. Appearance:
Name: Lola Race: Variant Human Class: Artificer Occupation: Librarian Brief Backstory: Born just before the turn of the century and after losing all members of her middle-class family to a combination of smallbox and The Great War, Lola began her career in the stacks at fifteen, shelving, cataloguing and repairing the less important books at a Special Private Library owned by a Lord and Lady she never saw and never bothered to remember their names. She read the books as she mended them, learning about modern science and history in particular. The head librarian noticed her excellent handwriting and abilities with mending paper and soon she was promoted, ending up replacing the head librarian when he retired. Only then was she given the keys to the secret collection: a cloistered room filled with texts exploring the secrets of alchemy. This collection inspired Lola to start experimenting with alchemy in earnest, but she is coming to the end of the possibilities suggested by the books in the Special Private Library and is starting to consider moving elsewhere with greater potential for learning. She saw the advertisement in the newspaper and her imagination was sparked. Would Peruvian gold assist her alchemical work? What new compounds could she find in Lima? Appearance: Art piece or description. (no pic yet) Lola is a short woman, with bobbed straight dark brown hair in a modish style. Her brown eyes tend to squint, although she has some ideas about making some goggles to help her see better than the glasses her doctor prescribed. She is wiry and compact, and usually wears a large wrap-around apron over her black dress to keep it from getting dusty. Character Sheet:Lola - Variant Human Artificer Alchemist
Intelligence agencies realized fairly early on the important part women could play in wartime spying, in what had been traditionally considered the domain of men. The crown intelligence service itself focused on guerrilla warfare outside the ordinary theaters of conflict. Women were thought to be more inconspicuous as spies, and capitalized on this perception during the war, carrying out tasks and missions that men were unable to do. In the field, women could go unnoticed as couriers delivering vital messages. Gender stereotypes also helped keep the women above suspicion. After all, who could possibly imagine a woman could be a viable combatant in war?
This is Agatha history. She was one of many spies trained from an early age, due to his family's link in the military. The program involved taking young women and turning them into elite spies and assassins. Some of these girls were orphaned or abandoned, and some of them were taken from their families by bargaining or force. The girls chosen for the "Oleander program" are put through strenuous daily training, including hand-to-hand training, acrobatics, weapon training, and tactical skills. The girls' training also includes intense ballet dance lessons, where their instructor ordered them to repeat their routine over and over again, so they can become unbreakable.
By 1925, as she completed her training and became a highly skilled assassin, Agatha had begun working for the British Crown Agency of Intelligence. Through her work with them, Agatha came into contact with his handler, who used her as the personal secretary of the German ambassador. Farrowwood intercepted a communication related to some foundings in Peru, something that the German Intelligence was going to find and look as it might be a potential artifact that could tip the balance of their lost power after the war. She delivered the pamphlet to her handler, setting her on a new adventure
Name: Michael "Miguel" Serra. Race: Half-elf. Class: Blood Hunter Order of the Mutant (possible future multiclass to wizard). Occupation: Antiques dealer and owner of a pawn shop. Brief Backstory:
Michael Serra, also known as Miguel Serra, was born many years ago before the Great War in a small settlement where he lived with the rest of elvenkind who knew of the existance of magic. When the War arrived and they saw the horrors that humanity was capable of doing with all the new technologies, they created a secret Order with the goal of keeping the knowledge of magic away from the grasp of the people that would use it for power and harm.
Michael, having lost his father because he was drafted because of his chemistry prowess, entered the Order to help in it's goal in keeping magic a secret and showed his own great knowledge in chemistry and incredible abilities in combat.
Now the Order has spread through the world with members from other races (including humans) to find every bit of magic knowledge, hide it and/or erase it so no human can use it for harm.
Michael is following a clue from Peru of an ancient civilization that could have dangerous knowledge of magic.
Appearance:
He has slightly pointy ears. In terms of facial looks, think of an old-school idea of this (without the wounds):

born to a long line of smiths (both in name, and profession) Robert was taught the craft but when he showed a lack of interest, his family allowed him to pursue other options, he tried many things, baker(a disaster), farmhand (not bad work but the pay was terrible), porter (terrible), and fisherman's help (not bad actually he quite enjoyed this one, it just wasn't a career for him), to name a few. before falling in with a cult of Caphriel, supposedly an archangel of unknown origins who keeps the world safe from magical incursions. when his father fell ill robert returned to blacksmithing to keep the family smithy running, he has since stuck with it, while also promoting worship of Caphriel whenever the chance presents. when he found the ad in the papers he prayed to Caphriel about it and when a commission for a decorative, yet functional, war-axe fell through he took that, and a general increase of birds and decrease of interest in smithing in the area as a portent he should join this Augustus Larking on his journey. packing what he felt was necessary for a journey, then what he felt would be useful for exploring, and finally what he felt could come in handy for surviving traps, and a few knickknacks of course, he prepared, spending much of the money from previous commissions. then, closing up the forge, he set out to make his fortune.

Name: Orlando Arsenau
Race: Human (variant)
Class: Ranger(1)/Fighter(2)
Occupation: Mountaineer
Brief Backstory: Orlando Arsenau inherited the interest of climbing and exploring from both his parents who met by chance on a short expedition into the Andes.

Name: Lola
Race: Variant Human
Class: Artificer
Occupation: Librarian
Brief Backstory: Born just before the turn of the century and after losing all members of her middle-class family to a combination of smallbox and The Great War, Lola began her career in the stacks at fifteen, shelving, cataloguing and repairing the less important books at a Special Private Library owned by a Lord and Lady she never saw and never bothered to remember their names.

Occupation: Spy for the crown
Brief Backstory: In construction
Appearance:
Character Sheet: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/107666254
