asher removes the vile of strange powder wheat he kept for study and opens the top spilling it in a pile on the alter befor lighting it with his torch , remembering the bright light from befor he covers his eyes as he dose so
" the powder is cold but when given heat it produces light plus it glows blue like the surroundings so its worth a try"
[Making a lot of assumptions there. Oh, and be ready to run. Everyone.]
A spark touches the powder, which promptly begins to glow blood red. Asher feels a rush of air at his back as the glowing powder begins pulling in oxygen from around it. The powder gets brighter. Asher can feel air being pulled from his lungs. Korbiña and Quartz as well. Even Lelantus' breath become shallow. More air. The torches begin to dim as air is stolen from around them, too. A loud grinding is heard as the powder now glows a bloody orange. It's getting brighter.
[Everyone roll Constitution Save (12+), then Athletics (14+). Fail either one and you're losing health, but for the sake of Asher somehow opening a magically sealed vial and how low everyone is on health, we'll say the seal was broken and the damage won't be much.]
Korbiña's first to catch on. She clears 20 feet in the blink of an eye before she feels at ease again. The very atmosphere around the glowing powder feels tense. It begins to dawn on Korbiña what's likely about to happen. It starts to make sense why the vial itself reacted so violently to being thrown into fire earlier.
The firbolg tries to grab hold of the 🧟♂️ halfling, but in trying to move him, finds an i.pediment in his lack of coordination, tripping over his own feet as he tries to get away.
The blast itself doesn't come immediately. As more air is pulled from around, the powder glows brighter. By the time it turns a dull yellow, the immediate area feels as dry as a desert, with light as blinding as the sun. None in the party can look directly at it.
...Then it all goes still. The noises stop, the blinding light disappears. What follows is a quick flash, a split second if counted. It's white and pure, the size of a pumpkin with the altar at it's epicenter. And with it comes a wall of sound and pure force. As the light pops out of existence, the wall spreads out like some furious beast. Korbiña is lucky to be clear of the blast, and her instincts save her immediate hearing, too. She covers ears and braces, weathering flying debris and party members.
The boy's aren't so lucky. Quartz is too large to be sent flying, and though his bulk is enough to provide Lelantus protection from the soundwave, it does nothing for him. He's pushed several feet by the blast, though his ears take the brunt of it. As he recovers, he finds he can only hear loud ringing, both in his ears and his head, accompanied by a dull throbbing. Asher gets thrown ten, fifteen, twenty feet, narrowly missing Korbiña in the process. He finds himself prone, with a pounding in his head and a rushing in his ears, almost as of Tiamat herself had shouted in his face!
[Korbiña avoids all damage. Quartz, roll 1d4. That's your damage. Asher, 1d4, then add 3. That's your damage. Lelantus is spared. Gregory's corpse clears the distance. Two vials remain.]
Korbiña shakes her head and stretches her jaw, then quickly looks for Asher who lies close to her on the ground, as he was hit with such force, that she fears for his life...
As the dust settles, so does the mist. Grass, mud and blue moss lie everywhere, with the largely undamaged altar at it's center. There's no latent fire and the team is no closer to the answer.
[Well yeah, dude. Druids. Got another one in another game, she feeds us the mushrooms that grow from her head and face. Mechanically, they're a gold mine.]
The light blue din of the vegetation seems to glow strong, almost as if in response. The sound of wind blowing through trees echoes in the clearing, though no wind can be felt. Perhaps the trees are cheering the show. Perhaps they appreciate the compliment. Or perhaps it's just wind unfelt.
Korbiña watches with exitement at what Quartz does and nods "maybe it's actually powdered blue moss... let's see what happens"
But she also takes a careful step back her senses sharp on the surroundings...

As the dust settles, so does the mist. Grass, mud and blue moss lie everywhere, with the largely undamaged altar at it's center. There's no latent fire and the team is no closer to the answer.
Quartz crouches to talk to the moss. "Such a violent place. Full of energy. Potential. Is that why you root here, despite the frost?"
(Mechanically, the plants can understanf him, but he can't understand them.)

Rising, Quartz thinks aloud, "Heat is cold, light is warm." He mutters to himself, "Bring light to cold."
Quartz advises the others "I want to try something. Everyone stand back. The powers that dwell here are proving unpredictable."
When it's clear, Quartz casts Faerie fire on the shrine.
