I ended a long lasting campaign as of recently. It reached a natural conclusion after a gigantic final battle, the characters all got their endings and it ended nicely. Now that it's ended I feel a bit empty. It had a great ending and am excited to run another campaign where I can really shove in some crazy ideas! Do any of you DMs have this feeling when you finish up a campaign. A bit of emptiness but also an excitement for the future ones?
Definitely. I get the same feeling after finishing a book or video game (particularly if its fantasy or sci fi). Especially if I really feel the characters, when its over there's this sense of bittersweet closure.
Personally I run my campaigns in the same shared world, I have been building it with various dm groups for about 15 years now on and off. So for me a campaign never ends, it simply moves into the next chapter with new characters exploring a different part of my world, or revisiting a part that has changed over the years .
I like that. Just cast the narrative torch over the next party.
Seeing the impacts of old campaigns will always be a fun(or potentially heartwrenching) moment
Players meeting NPCs they have met previously as children with other characters, now grown up, or traveling to what was a lush green land to find it has been devestated by war
Good for you, sounds like it was a worth while game you ran.
I have been lucky enough to feel that way as well, both as a dm, and as a player. As has been said above, the fun part is useing your old campaign in your new games. I have had players play their old characters children, and events that the players took part in have shaped the world.
