I'm starting my very first campaign as a DM in May, and I'd really like to potentially offer up Axolotls as a possible familiar to have for magic users that want them. Not really any specific reason for it, I think it would just be a cute and fun addition that I think all my players would enjoy. I've seen a thread talk about it before on reddit I think, but I was wondering if anyone here had Stat block ideas for an Axolotl like that. Thanks! Appreciate the help! :)
that's a great idea. you should totally do it. as for the statblock, reskin a rat, give it Amphibious and a swimming speed

Alignment: Lawful Evil
Fun Fact: i gain more power the more you post on my forum threads. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
Axolotls have no jump speed and are not fully amphibious, relying mostly on gills for respiration. Unless you are running an underwater campaign, its ability to help the party would be very limited. You could, of course, just say that it is related to the axolotl, like a magical variant found in your homebrew world.
Here, after quickly looking up this quite interesting creature that I had never heard of before, going primarily off of its Wikipedia entry I whipped this up for you, it’s an amalgamation of various parts of a lizard, frog, quipper, and some bits I borrowed from the troll. Here it is:
Keen Smell. The Axolotl has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.
Regeneration. The Axolotl regains 1 hit point at the start of its turn. If the Axolotl takes acid or fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of the Axolotl's next turn. The Axolotl dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.
Water Breathing. The Axolotl can breathe only underwater.
Actions
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack:+0 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1 piercing damage.
Description
The axolotl is unusual among amphibians in that it reaches adulthood without undergoing metamorphosis. Instead of taking to the land, adults remain aquatic and gilled. The axolotl does not heal by scarring and is capable of regenerating entire lost appendages, and more vital structures, such as tail, limb, central nervous system, and tissues of the eye and heart. They can even restore parts of their brains.

Reflavoring is especially your friend for small stuff like this.
