Newer DM here gearing up for my second campaign after my first imploded, just trying to learn from some mistakes and need to bounce an idea. I'm running a plot timeline in the background while the party tells their story, this is to make sure I have a consistent presence on the game but won't feel pressure to rail road.
So my idea is to add a weight to the quests or adventures(the weight will be hidden from them) they go on, the weight affects how far along the timeline is. The more involved with the plot the quest is the more it increases or decreases the pace of that timeline, and the timeline isn't written in stone, what I have written is just if there is no interaction from the party with the plot.
The players have been told about the plot moving in the background without them and are aware of the plot before going in, I'm just looking for advice on this method.
