I have a question about this monster. The needle volley reads,
Needle Volley. The needle spawn makes up to 1d6 needle attacks, but it cannot attack the same target more than twice during its turn.
Does this mean it shoots 1d6 needles all at once each turn towards an enemy, each doing 1d4+3 damage? Or does it do 1d6 needle attacks per encounter? I feel it’s the former but want to know how you’d run it.
It can use its Needle Volley every round. Each round you use the needle volley you roll 1d6 to determine how many attacks it makes that round. Each attack deals 1d4+3 damage on a hit. A creature cannot be hit by more than two needles in the same turn.
Its supposed to be like a shotgun effect, hence the random number of attacks and the restriction on how many hits a creature can suffer in the same turn. If you roll a 6 on the d6, the Needle Spawn could target 6 creatures each with a separate needle, or it can target 3 creatures each with 2 needles, or it can do any variation in between.

When you choose to make the Needle Volley attack, roll 1d6. That number is the number of Needle attack's the needle spawn makes during that turn.
So if you rolled a 3, you'd make 2 Needle attacks against one target and one needle attack against a different target.
MFF V1 has some interesting stat blocks, there aren't many creature you potentially have to make 6 attack rolls a turn for.
