Are you making any DM 2022 Resolutions? have any particular aims goals or things you want to do differently regarding DM'ing this year?
Personally I want to finnish HotDQ (Hoard of the Dragon Queen) and get my players to make new characters for a new campaign CoS (Curse of Strad) before continuing into RoT (Rise of Tiamat) campaign, really enjoyed the ravenloft setting when I did The House of Lament from VRGtR Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft as a side quest. Particularly I want to do a better job of tying in my players new characters backgrounds.
I also want to try organising my sessions using onenote following Taking20 Cody inspiring layout guide
“It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt, It lies behind stars and under hills, And empty holes it fills, It comes first and follows after, Ends life, kills laughter.” J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
My 2022 resolution is to start a war. The players in my homebrew game have been dancing around the edges of a conflict between two barons for a while and the war is going to set a lot of things in motion.
Right now it's mostly down to who is going to strike first, which the players might have some amount of sway over, intended or no...
I spend hours and hours thinking through tiny details to ensure lore and NPC side plots are consistent, and I realized that I was just making way more work for myself than I needed to. I run an intrigue campaign, so I had to do more of this than perhaps many DMs do. At this stage in the campaign, though, it's mostly full steam ahead to the BBEG. And, frankly, it's okay if there are plot holes...
Not sure if I'm going to do OneNote, Google Notebooks, or double down for WorldAnvil and a suite of its allied tools, but a better documented campaign, with player accessible/editable and DM only sections. I think I'm migrating to digital paper / digital ink (still researching) so that may a be a factor as to what I settle with.
As part of that I'm doing a deep dive into what Purple, Orange, and Yellow dragons could be - using old Dragon articles and prior editions and maintaining a thread in Story and Lore for brainstorming. Consequently, DDB-wise will probably be lurking and participating more in here, story&lore, homebrewing and the more mechanics oriented discussions than Gen Discussion. I've had some dispiriting deja vu in some threads ending the year there and have come to realize like many things Internet time is a flat circle there.
(as an aside, since it's not a DM thing, in PbP my character will bring down a mountain, even if I'm still standing inside it.)
I am definitely going to try and homebrew more. I have been using the published adventures a bit too much for how long I have been DMing, though I have done some homebrew adventures but they have all been very minor. I have even started to homebrew a campaign based off of an idea I had a few days ago and I'm hoping that I will find success with it.
I am going to try to use the Lazy Dungeon Master method for the first time. I also hope to provide more player agency in my games. As a player, I plan to be easier on my dm!
To continue supporting 3rd party 5E vendors who love the lore of the game and put out quality content. Currently playing Keep on the Borderlands and moving onto the Temple of Elemental Evil from Goodman Games.
My resolution is to swear off D&D, for a while at least. There are so many other tabletop RPGs, and most of them are better at telling unique stories than this one. I think it’s time I started giving them more attention.
My big goal for this year is get some of my friends into D&D--some of them have been interested in playing for a while but the whole COVID situation made in-person games less than ideal. I'll be starting up a new homebrew (set at Strixhaven as they're Harry Potter fans) for them, provided we can slay the scheduling boss.
Otherwise, looking to finish up a homebrew that has lasted the past two years remotely and starting another new homebrew with my remote group once that one is done.
Mostly I am just looking forward to having in-person games again. Virtual games are not exactly ideal--going to be great to gather folks around the table and throw some dice with friends.
It's the same plan we have every year Pinkie: Try to take over the world!
Try to be more patient with some of my more difficult players, stay disciplined with prep-time and keeping the campaign organized and ask for feedback from the players more often.

Finally have the guts to kill the first PC in my campaign. I have been careful the first year. But I have decided that evil alignment and chaotic monsters would finish someone off... For the good ones, they will knock someone out I guess.
How do other DMs handle this? Especially if the PC did not have there "arc" or "spotlight" yet.
I would like to publish my first homebrew adventure (The Cheese Chase) to DMs Guild. I hope to do that before summer (UK).
Campaign goals:
Celestial Mare (4 players): I want to get my campaign moving and get the players out of my demiplane and into the world I've built! Conclude this plotline and start the biger quest, now they are comfortable as the characters (and I am comfy as the DM!)
Lunarcy (solo): Keep the ball rolling, get the plot to its conclusion - it's a big adventure to finish!
One-Shots: I want to write a sequel to the Cheese Chase and run it in the local club!
Thank you for all the replies, so many very cool plans for the year ahead wish you all the best of success with them and am quite looking forward to the possibility of spotting a thread related to your particular project. I always find it intriguing to hear what people are up to, musings and actual goals they have.... is DM voyeurism a thing!?! :o
@RazDow killing off a PC probably worth it's own thread though I'm sure it's been touched on many a time before and I dare say you'll find as many ways of handling PC death as there are DM's

I am not an evil DM at all, but my players have asked for me to be more unforgiving. It's not my resolution to just kill of a PC, but more to have the heart to be able to do so. If it happens I want it to have impact and not just: you ded, new pc who dis?

You can hit them in their magic items, their rations, and their gold, too. It doesn't have to just be death on the line.
As for me, I want to get my new campaign up and running by the end of February. It's a ridiculous rework of the entire Player's Handbook to turn it into a Rogue-lite. Wish me luck... I think I'm gonna need it, lol.
HaHa! I managed ONE of my resolutions! finished HotDQ with my group last night! had a super time with it quite abit of customisation particularly Skyreach... which worked out well players certainly said they enjoyed it not that they know the original to compare
So now no excuses regarding getting into OneNote for CoS and integrating players backgrounds
if any of the original commenters are reading would love to now how your getting on well I hope

Yeah. I mean, I was trying to draw players from my existing groups, which would mean the players would be playing 2 or even 3 games a week. That's not feasible for everyone. When one of these wraps, I'm going to suggest it as something to do while the other DM prepares his next thing.
