First I would like to apologise for any english mistakes since this is not my main language
So, I was just thinking (or trying to) could there be another school of magic? I started to think and realized that the 8 schools encompass basically everything, I thought of a school of time, but that is on transmutation because it bends and changes stuff, also a healing school, but it is on evocation/necromancy or even transmutation too. Coming to think of it I realized that a new school of magic would have to be something related to something that we don't understand (btw congratulations WOTC for making something that can explain everything in 8 topics)
The aftermath is: I had an idea that maybe doesn't fall on any of the other schools and I want your opinion on it (or other schools too) the premise of the school is experience, like life experience or something, the spells could be gaining (or taking) experience points, or using them to do stuff, like transforming a number of experience points in one class to another, possibly gaining levels in that class, other thing would be (and I think this would be the 9° level spell) chosing an ability from another class and aquire it (like reckless attack, second wind, wild shape, etc)
This was the most far that I got trying to think of something that don't fit in any other school, what do you think?
Don't see why, you can use this feature just like the cards that take out exp from the deck of many things, you can lose any number of points but you can't delevel
Seems like an interesting idea, but I think it would be difficult to balance it. Also, I'm not sure how effective it would be in combat or even non-combat situations. Don't let me discourage you though if you really like the idea. If you think you can make it work then give it a try!
Keep in mind, the deck of many things is a legendary item and notorious for breaking campaigns, so might be best to not try to make a comparison to it?
Back in AD&D 2e (in one of the Players’ Options books) they had alternative schools of effect based around what the spells DO (like fire magic, or Force magic), not how they work. You might want to look into those.
Highly disagree with this, it is known for breakfast ng campainha if the dm don't know what he is doing, if you prepare yourself for the outcome it is just another item with some crazy potential, if you put this in your campaign with no preparation you are doing it wrong. Either way this post is not about it, it is about schools of magic
ok..... The deck of many things (The Fool & Jester cards) is arguably not "player agency" based - and certainly not "character agency." A character has no idea how many experience points they have and would have no idea what they were doing if the 4th wall was broken and they were given access to their xp's.
That said... I've run a campaign that included two entire new classes of magic (zero relation to anything in D&D), but were accessible only to NPC's, and created the homebrew idea of "mana" that applied to all forms of magic. Your idea can work, but don't agree that xp should be the source of power. Now, if you were to create something like.... "life force points"... that increased each level and assigned a point value to any spell/effect cast using those points, that could work. Monks have Ki points, Sorcerers have Sorcery points, you would simply be creating a different version of that idea and applying it to the new school.

Screwing with XP is a really, really bad idea. There's a reason there hasn't been a way to do it for two editions.
