In our session today, a drow mage hit the party with a Fireball. Everyone in the area, including the rogue, failed the save (6th level still, so no Evasion).
What I rolled for the spell's damage was 3, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, for a total of 12 damage.
That is all. I just felt like I had to share this. :p
It's pretty well-understood that the Sorcerer's "Empower Spell" doesn't work out to that much damage on average. But man, it's a nice backup to have...
A few weeks ago, my sorcerer was trying to utilize her fireball spell, but wanted to make sure she didn't hit the party. Problem was, party was full on engaged with the enemy. Her solution? Aim for the locked wooden door at the other end of the room. Took out the door, and the enemies, leaving the rest of the party unhurt. Sadly, she died later in that same dungeon.
I had a rogue who was sneaking ahead of the rest of the party in a dungeon and fumbled a stealth roll whilst trying to get back past an encounter of bugbears that was designed as a tough fight for the entire party. The rogue's only real exit was to run down a tunnel of the mine, with bugbears closing in on him. The tunnel was a dead end, except for a mineshaft, so he just ran and jumped down.
I was like, "Are you sure?"
"Yes, they're just behind me, so it's my only move."
The player was expecting it to be something like a single story drop to another tunnel below.
It was a 120ft drop down to a cave. That's 12d6 damage from falling for a 4th level rogue.
So, I grabbed extra dice out of my dice tub and rolled, on the table, in front of all of the players.
15 damage.
On 12d6.
The rogue player couldn't stop laughing as his rogue dusted himself off and made his escape!
Sometimes, the dice just want to make the story their own.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.
Or an Evoker's Overchannel. Not a "backup", in the sense that you need to declare it before you roll damage, but it's one of those things...
Those are generally players' toys, though, not often seen in the hands of random antagonists. :p

A dwarf with a canoe on his back? What could go wrong?

Perhaps he fell onto a conveniently placed hay stack. :D
Did he become an Assassin after that? :p
