I am currently running a homebrewed campaign for 2 players and it is going really well so far, but I feel like the combat is never as exciting as I want it to be. Right now they are level 3, one being 2 levels of Bard/1 level of Warlock and the other being 3 levels of ranger. They are both smart players who understand how to make combat work for them, so I feel as if combat just isn't as interesting as it could be. What are some things that I can do to spice it up more? I want to make encounters that aren't solely focused on kill or be killed because that feels very repetitive. I would really like to hear if any one has any ideas, especially regarding the warlock PC because he is still learning how to interact with his patron and I want to incorporate that into combat. Whether it be obstacles or traps or a timed event, I just want to make combat exciting for the players and myself.
1. Make the fights harder, no one likes an easy fight. 2. Incorporate more mechanics in a fight, such as making a certain enemy immune to all of the player's attacks, so they have to find a way to blow it up or throw it in a pit, I did this once for my players and they ended up epically running away in a minecart after they set off a chain reaction of explosives to open a sinkhole and kill a boss that was too difficult for them. 3. Add dialogue after fights, such as interrogation or something else

Even just the free sample you can read is very informative on making combat more interesting for fighting things like goblins and orcs.
