My typical way of running campaigns is to establish broad strokes for a setting to give my players inspiration and context for making PC's, and then build the plot largely around what they come up with. It seems to work very well. I have had one player, though, request that his PC's background not be delved into immediately. Is this typical? What are your experiences with introducing PC-based plot, and (how long) should a DM wait?

I would ask your player. And remember, you can build story for that PC based on their interactions during the stories you curate for the other PCs. Once they’re ready you can tie it back in.
