Can we talk about Meepo for a second? Probably the greatest character in The Tales form the Yawning Portal. I had heard that he was lovable and fun to interact with, but holy shit, I wanted to bring him with us for the rest of the adventure. One of my party members insists that if his character dies, he's rolling Meepo as his next character. He was just great, and I really liked the way our DM played him. Anyone else love Meepo like I do?
Meepo is a legend. I don't know what it is about him but there's all kinds of stories about him on the web.
My group loved him too, way back in 2001. I voiced him as Kahn Souphanousinphone from King of the Hill.
I brought him back as a successful crime boss NPC a couple years later and everyone loved it.

Admin on MeWe's Conservative D&D Players group, but I believe that no matter what our differences are, our love of D&D is something that should bring us together. So, if you don't start something I won't either. Fair enough?
Method Actor, Storyteller, Tactician type who plays peacemaker at the table. This fall will be my 39th year playing D&D, Gamma World, Car Wars, Talisman, Serenity and Traveller.
Haha Meepo....poor bastard. The party I'm Dmin'g for stuck a knife in his eye... I had him asleep as they were creeping in late at night.
I'm mixing up Sunless Citadel as a side piece to HotDQ happening at the same time. I'm running both campaigns right now with some of the same players running different characters. Since the citadel is an old Cult of the Dragon hangout it made perfect sense to have the cult in there with the Kobolds. The white dragon wyrmling is the cults, and the Goblins stole it.The cult is also in there searching for the Black Dragon Mask for Reznir in HotDQ.
I started the first campaign with LMoP and they ended their last session killing Black Spider in the mine (Who I had working for Reznir and the cult securing the mine as a treasure hoard for Tiamat. It was another DMs idea I ran with) when the party gets back to Phandalin. I'm mixing it with the beginning of HotDQ and have replaced Greenest with Phandalin....Places they are familiar with burning, people they know dying...total chaos. I can't wait, they never drove the dragon off from Thundertree....mistake look whats happening now. LOL.
As a side note Sunless Citadels Faerun setting is fairly close to Thundertree. I love it when a plan comes together.
My group took Meepo on as a guide, they really liked him.
He got in some trouble with the group after he released the kobolds taken prisoner by the goblins and helped them kill a goblin that the party had tied up but had promised to free later, all while the party took a rest.
After that they made him fight in a battle as punishment. He went down and they felt bad enough to heal him and tell him he was brave, which he believed completely as he had come to idolize the group.
Once the group returned with "brave" Meepo and the kobold's mascot in tow, his reputation with the rest of the kolbolds increased dramatically - should the group ever return to the area they may find Meepo the Brave, Kobold War Leader, has become a bit of a problem for the village of Oakhurst.

Meepo took on a similar role in my adventure. He is actually still on friendly terms with the two humans in the party, but he warned the Gnomes that they definitely shouldn’t come back, even though they were really cool for Gnomes, and Meepo is actually still friends with them, athough he would never admit it to any of his Kobold Tribe. (The Gnomes in the party didn’t reveal themselves to Meepo until they had re-captured his Dragon, when he pledged his friendship.)
So Meepo the Brave has his dragon again, but what happens in a year or two when that dragon has grown? How do the Kobolds handle a young white dragon that is feisty? I’m planning to send a group of characters back to into the time elapsed version of the Citadel.....
Why would Belak want to share the summer fruit of the Gulthias Tree with anyone? This character is described as "twisted" and carries the title of "Outcast" and yet he has the goblins distribute the apple annually. Why? What is his motivation?
Well, there's a really fun cross over with Sunless Citadel and Curse of Strahd, this could shed some light, but for the sake of this thread I'll keep it as a separate event.
Belak may be twisted, but he is not stupid, the summer fruit has 2 purposes if you think about it: first it can generate a large amount of revenue when auctioned off due to it's healing properties. Second the seeds create twig blights which are beholden to the Gulthias tree.
Belak could use the revenue to further his machinations and the Gulthias tree will be able to use the blights to expand it's influence as well.
Meepo, oh my goodness, this is my favorite adventure to run for new players. I have 4 or 5 different groups I've run it for and every single one of them (one group was over 10 years ago) talk about Meepo to this day. I play him as an introvert, child like, and with a nasally lisp. He is the most endearing NPC I have ever had the privilege to run.
I do think the dungeon as it's written has some logical inconsistencies in its arrangement that require further explanation.
For example, we know from the introduction that the kobold occupation is relatively recent. And we know from Yusdrayl that they've occupied the areas around the entrance for at least a month since they met with the previous human adventure party. Yet that party apparently fought and defeated goblins in the entrance tower. How did those goblins get there? And how is it that the goblins can get in and out to trade magic fruit at Oakhurst if they are at war with the kobolds. And why would the kobolds then keep their precious dragon both far from their own guards and right on the edge of the goblin territory.
Of course, I'm sure we can all come up with a reasonable story to explain all of this, but that ought to be in the introductory backstory. If a module requires a detailed reading of all of the encounters and the construction of a sensible narrative to explain it all, it makes me wonder how much prep time this is going to save me.

This. Glad to see I'm not the only DM questioning the inconsistencies I found in this scenario. For sure I could simply hand-wave the discrepancies, however, I like the challenge of finding an acceptable (to me) resolution that might never come into play.

Hi There Friends of DnD beyond,
I could not find a general post about TSS and sought of starting one.
We could share experiences, mods, questions and advice.
Let me start with a question:
Could someone share Belak the Outcast's stats. I can't seem to find them
Happy hunting everyone
He uses the same stats as the Druid and his extra spells are listed on page 30 on the bottom right hand side.

I liked him a lot. Unfortunately, my DM had him eaten by the baby white dragon a short time after we encountered it.

Meepo was a legend indeed, he ended up in the D20 Modern setting as well he was that well liked.
Which considering he appeared in only that single first D&D 3rd edition module, is quite an acheivment!
"I am The Ancient, I am The Land"
Indeed I don't know why but he is a lovable character.
Sadly my players killed him while he was sobbing in his room, after just a few words. :(
I think the Hero Meepo in Dota 2 is named after him.

Meepo... my group literally killed him after getting the dragon and cut off his arms...

Good idea!
“Surviving Port Nyanzaru” - Dungeon Master Tier 1
I found this an interesting characterisation of Meepo for anyone looking for ideas. https://youtu.be/dWDg3p64ch0?t=3h8m50s
I think I'm going to play him as depressed and bullied by the other kobolds for allowing the bugbear to take Calcryx.

How do you guys pronounce Belak's name? I try to make him sound menacing but my players keep hearing me call him Block.
I've been pronouncing it Bell-Ack. But never mind that, how are you pronouncing Balsag? (I'm sure my players are going to be mocking him on that one.)
