In the modifiers in creating a homebrew, what do we need to do in order to surpass the maximum of 20 limitation. For example: increase your con or dex score by one, to a maximum of 20. How do we ignore the limitations in the modifications.
Am I doing something wrong Bonus-> Subtype: Ability Score maximum -> Ability Score: [ABIL] -> Fixed Value: 20. I add a 20 to the fixed value am I not supposed to touch that?
Its still not working; Increase your Charisma score by 1, to a maximum of 20. It still doesn't want to overcame the over 20. I am still stuck whenever I edit the base score from 18 - 19 it still stays stuck to 18 - 19 and I cant move it past 20.
Sigh so we can't raise the ability score past 18; except by using stacking and ability score maximum. Sorry for so much questions I think I am done here.
Any ability score can hit 20 naturally. They are capped at 20.
”Bonus” = “Raise your ability score by X to a maximum of 20.”
“Stacking Bonus” = “Raise your ability score by X.” (👈 Note, not capped @ 20.)
Regular “bonuses” only add up so far before they hit that ceiling and stop adding any more. A “stacking” bonus is so named because it can “stack” on top of the other bonuses and reach above 20. In addition to that, the system has an “Ability Score Maximum” set at 20 as well. So in order to exceed 20 in any ability score you need a combination of at least 2 modifiers: “Stacking Bonus” annddd you need the “Bonus” to the “Ability Score Maximum.” (Like in the movies when they need to turn both keys at the same time to stop the bomb.) That’s why, in my first post I gave you both keys:
Modifier: Bonus->Subtype: Ability Score Maximum->Ability Score: [ABIL]->Fixed Value: X
👆That one raises the cap from 20 to 20+X (Max 30) This one will actually apply a particular “stacking bonus” capable of meeting the new curling. 👇
Modifier: Stacking Bonus->Subtype: [Ability Score]->Fixed Value: X
Please note, I provided you with the absolute full instructions for exactly what needed to be filled out in both instances. All you had to do was put in a number for X. (The only thing I failed to Manitoba specifically is that X cannot be above 10. That’s my bad.)
Homebrew’s what I do, it’s my thing. (I know that system as well as anybody can and better than most folks do.) My “other thing” is helping folks like yourself figure out how to make it do what they want. (Or say so if it’s not possible.)
Next time, just fill out exactly what I say, and just ignore anything I don’t mention. (If I’m not 1,000% sure I’m right, I’ll say so.) I promise, I won’t steer you wrong on any of this technical stuff. You may disagree with my opinions, but this technical homebrew stuff, I got you covered.
I don't want the stacking bonus as mentioned here, that just seems to add to the stat directly. I want the OTHER gear to add to the stats, and just have an ability score max override. It sure seems this doesn't work.

Sorry I missed this before. What is it you’re trying to do?
Okay so now I have a query months later, in that I do the steps above, and it simply won't exceed 20. Weirder yet, if they have say a belt of storm giant Strength it'll set the stat back down to 20. And frankly I don't get why.

Post the url to your character sheet so someone can take a look.

Well that is the dealio friend, it affects every character sheet in every campaign. Which is why I am bemused.. There is nothing setting it to 20, or any such. Plus this is for a player of mine anyhow.

Okay. It would still help if you posted a link to a character sheet that's experiencing the issue, so that someone can see what interactions might be going on there.
If you made a specific homebrew to extend an ability score's max value, link to that as well (UNPUBLISHED); a mod would be able to see if there's something odd with the coding.

Edit: Replaced fixed value integer in second modifier with “X” for standardization.

Because the limitation is somewhat not working.
And what does stacking mean? How is it going to apply to this?
Wait so if I leave it blank will it automatically cap the 20 limit?
You need two modifiers:
That will give them a bonus capable of going above 20.
That will actually raise the maximum, it cannot go above 30.

So its not Bonus -> Ability Score Increase -> Strength Increase -> +1
Also for the:
That will actually raise the maximum, it cannot go above 30.

Woah after so many months, I came back to this, I actually get it now ty.
Happy to help, as usual.
