What I've been doing for now is adding a backpack and renaming it/modifying properties to closely match the homebrew container until that functionality is implemented.
You could also use an alms box instead of a backpack since it is weightless (compared to the 5 lbs weight of a backpack) and has no inherent maximum weight limit (as opposed to the backpack’s 30 lbs).
Commenting in 2022 that being able to create a homebrew container would be swell
Apart from party sharing (which they're reportedly working on) what would you like a homebrew container to do that you can't do by modifying an existing one? You can already add a backpack or any other container, and edit the name, weight, and carry capacity under the Customize option. I use that to create custom vial pouches, magical weapon sheathes, fanny packs, bandoliers, chests, etc.
I would love to be able to homebrew a magic item container to cover some cool magic items from 3rd party D&D books (one of which is very relevant as to what's in it, as the item itself can do things with stored items), and not have to re-make it per character, but instead have it by item in my homebrew creations. So mostly party-sharing, but also ease/speed of use.

My characters got an armored lab coat (basically leather armor) that holds 20 potions on the inside for quick access. It would be nice to be able to actually put the potions inside the lab coat on the character sheet. Best solution I have right now is just rename leather armor as Lab Coat, and then have a separate item holding the potions.
I use the Homebrew item Dress with Pockets for my wizard. Each pockets can hold different amounts based on rarity AND can give a plus to AC. I've come up with work arounds to make everything work for now, but having it as one item instead of an item per pocket and an item for the AC (since I use the customize slots for my Shield and my Mage Armor) would be nice
It's now June of 2023. Since WotC purchased D&D Beyond, I'm pretty sure they've altogether abandoned further development of its Homebrew feature. Yes, it's technically possible to customize a mundane container in your inventory and rename it to match your magic item, just as it's entirely possible to play Dungeons and Dragons without using D&D Beyond.
This.. This item illustrates exactly why I want this feature:
I'm trying to make a coat that has similar properties [no distinctions, just everything inside the coat is a bag of holding] and a necklace that can be upgraded by attaching other pendants to it.
i really want to make a copy of Shtaaka's bag of everything from the girls who don't dnd podcast. But since WotC is apparently incapable of working more than thirty minutes on D&D beyond, we STILL can't make homebrew containers.
With the new container functionality in inventory, is it possible to create homebrew items that also act like containers such as backpacks and chests?
Not yet.

I will be using this idea. I am trying to make a magic holster for my player and couldn't figure out how to make it work

So... it's been a year.
Would be great, if the Container-tag actually did something...
