Getting ready to DM a homebrew campaign for my nephews. Haven't really played since the early 90's outside of DDO. When looking through the different resource books that I've picked up, I couldn't help but notice the lack of magical items that give you a plus to a skill check. Instead I see a lot of items that grant you advantage.
Could you still incorporate say, boots that grant you a +1, or +2, etc... to stealth checks instead of Boots of Elvenkind which grant you advantage. I know it's homebrew and you can do whatever you want, just curious if anyone has used items like this and how it impacted the game. I don't want to OP anything and then have to "fix" it later.
You can. It kinda throws the “bounded accuracy” out the window though. Advantage on an active roll also automatically applies a +5 bonus to that skill’s passive score. (I know that the game never mentions specifically a “passive stealth,” but technically any skill can have a passive score.) Statistically speaking, advantage is roughly equivalent to an +5 bonus to the active roll, but the highest possible maximum stays the same. (Hence the “bounded” part of bounded accuracy.) The other thing to consider is that a character can have Advantage on a check from 5 different sources but it only applies once, whereas static bonuses (like a +1) all stack on top of each other. Additionally, that character could have advantage from 5 sources, but a single instance of disadvantage will negate all of them. Nothing negates static bonuses other than static detriments, but as you noticed there’s none of those this edition either except for combat modifiers (+1 weapons for example).

Thanks!
