Hey all, first time posting but I've been using DND Beyond for a while now.
I run a fully homebrew campaign with some players. In one of the first few sessions one of the players found an item that is essentially a lucky rabbit's foot that provides them a pretty big bonus to ability checks (+2), with the side effect of if they lose possession of said foot, they will then be cursed with a -2 until the curse is removed.
What I'm having problems with is creating a way to show the -2 in the DND Beyond character sheet, instead of telling them to just remember to subtract 2 each time. My thought is I can create an "item" to have in their inventory that reduces the ability checks by 2, but when I put the value of -2 in the homebrew item, it still adds 2 on the character sheet.
Any assistance would be wonderful, as I'm just trying to make it easier for the player to remember until the curse is removed. Thanks all!
Modifier: Bonus->Subtype: Ability Checks->Fixed Value -2
Are you using an actual keyboard with an attached number pad? If so, do not use the minus sign on your number pad, instead use the hyphen on the regular keyboard. (That’s an actual thing that matters. It because of the difference in coding between a hyphen and a minus sign and how it interacts with the website’s html or some such or other.)
Did you remember to remove the lucky tab it’s foot before testing the adverse downside item?
Did you start with something that originally required Attunement and then removed that requirement? If so, rebuild it from scratch instead. (Removing a pre-existing Attunement requirement is known to make things go wonky.)
Finally, after you add anything to, change anything on, or remove anything from any homebrew, you MUST re-save the entire thing using the main [SAVE CHANGES ] button under Basic Information or the system won’t pick up your changes. It can then take up to 20 minutes for those changes to push through to the character builder/sheet.

It should be:
