To clarify, I know already how to set ability scores for specific abilities, as well as how to allow players to choose an ability score to raise in their options - this much I have already figured out on my own.
The context is that I am creating a bunch of Human subraces for a homebrew campaign, and to balance out the additional traits that the subraces have, I want players to be able to choose 4 abilities to increase by 1, rather than the 6 ability increases humans normally have.
What I am unable to do is allow players to choose between 4 ability scores, without allowing them to select the same ones in repeat, and stack them. I looked at the Half-Elf race (they have the same trait, only for 2 scores) but despite recreating the trait exactly (creating a Copy in my collection allows me to see it), it still allows choices of the same score 4 times over....
Funnily enough, I tested this with the copy of the Half-Elf race in the character creator, and it seems that the same thing happens - but then using the official Half-Elf race works as intended - perhaps this not an something we can homebrew?
I don't mess with races much, but I know in other sections there is a box you can check that reads something like "make this choice dependant on a previous choice". Perhaps that may be what you are looking for?
You would need to create 6 Options (one for each Ability Score) with a choice of 4 at creation. I explained how it o set up options in these threads (you can ignore anything regarding “granted options,” they don’t work for races and you don’t need them anyway; tho allow them to select 4 of the 6, enter “1,1,1,1” as the Levels Where Options Known”):
Sorry to necro and old thread, but I have a problem with Options maxing out at 3. I've created 5 Options for a Trait, and when I make up a dummy character it will only let me select three - there are all 5 options in the drop down menu, but I only get to select 3. I want to select more than 3, I've put "1,1,1,1" in the Levels Where Options Known field, but it's not giving me that 4th option.

It should work.
Are you absolutely sure you put the fourth 1 in there? If so, re-save the racial trait and then make sure you re-save the entire race using the main [SAVE CHANGES] button under Basic Information so the system is sure to update. Then remove the race from your character and wait 20 minutes before adding it back again. Or, it might be a better idea to try it on a whole brand new character just in case. Please see the General Homebrew FAQ #6 for details.
If it still isn’t working then there must be something incorrectly programmed on either that trait or those Options. You can find an entire walkthrough on how to properly set up Options in the Homebrew Subclasses & Species FAQ #1 if you need help fixing it. If you still can’t quite get it to work right post again and I’ll do my best to help you.
Thanks for the reply! I actually figured it out - I WAS doing it correctly, but when I was making up my dummy characters to test I wasn't checking Optimize Class Features or Customize Your Origin. Everything works find now.
Hi there,

Any insight would be awesome.

Hmmm..... I will have to have a look around, I haven't seen that option yet. Which other section do you mean exactly?
The subclass section when creating features. Allows branching paths, to my understanding. I have not explored it myself, unfortunately.
Side note, it also happens with the "customize ability scores" option introduced in Tasha's, so it may also just be a weird system limitation.

You shouldn’t have to do that. When you did that it probably just forced a server cache update. Does it still work if you turn those off?
