So here’s my plan, I’m going to create an item that grants a custom feat. The feat grants two uses of a 1st or 2nd level spell on the cleric spell list. (Basically the fey touched feat)… the effect is functionally the same thing as adding a spell slot.
I’m currently editing it now. I’ll let you know if it works
You have to manually add the feat, with the way it is now. But a magic item can add a feat it just has to be on the list of feats the dndbeyond allows. (No homebrew)
instead of selecting “bonus” select “feat” then select the feet you want to add. Not sure if it auto adds it or not (didn’t get that far as it wouldn’t let me use the custom feat I wanted). This crap is really hard to do on mobile. (Really wish they’d add a more robust homebrew system and make it mobile friendly.).
My current dm doesn’t use DND beyond so he comes up with some pretty crazy homebrews which leave me and the four others in the party who do use DND beyond constantly scrambling to figure out how to incorporate his “generous” items into DND beyond without it just being a text description we have to keep track of.
like im still lost how to do this one:
Penance - once per long rest, as a bonus action, inflict 1d8 damage + your charisma modifier to yourself. You gain temporary HP equal to twice the damage until you finish a short or long rest.
Ahh, no. It doesn’t actually add a feat at all. The options are there in the homebrewer, but they don’t work. Please see the Items & Equipment FAQ #12.
Hey there! Great guide, thank you. I am working on creating a cleric subclass and so far I think I am doing okay, but when I went to go replace the list of prepared spells, saved, refreshed, etc, now both the new prepared spells AND the original list show up for my character. Is there something I am missing to get the initial list of prepared spells to drop off in favor of the newly added ones? Thanks! :)

First off, thank you! I’m glad you find it helpful. Now to your question…. When you added the spells did you follow the steps layer out in the Subclasses & Races FAQ #13?
If so then you would have to remove the old spells from that field. If you did that already, then please see the General FAQ #s 6 & 6-B. If it still isn’t resolved for you then post back here again.
If you added the spells in some other fashion, then delete them and follow the steps under the Subclasses & Races FAQ #13, and remove the old spells from that field too.
Either way, post back here again and lemme know how it works out for you.
Once I've made a Homebrew Feat, how can I make it usable by myself or people in my campaign? I have already made all of my content shareable in the campaign, but the Feat is not showing-up.
Do you perhaps know why I can't actually expend the charges once I have the item on a character? I'm testing the item before I finalize it and it doesn't seem to work. I know it's not strictly necessary since I can just keep track of it on my own, but that's kind of the point of this whole thing, isn't it?

I’m not sure I understand you correctly. Do you mean when you click/tap the charge boxes they don’t turn red?
Is there a way to conveniently insert links, if they don't leave dndbeyond?
for example, there's no [rule] tag for "mounted combat", but I'd like to have a link nonetheless. even though the target site is dndbeyond, a link is transformed like this in the final text:

Well that’s annoying… maybe I can jury rig something by copying the featouched feat…
There is no possible way to grant an additional spell slot on DDB. Your best bet for faking it is by adding an Action somehow.

It’s a little wonky because DND beyond won’t let me publish the feat if I list the correct cleric spells one by one but it still works.
Did it work at all?!? I ask because so far a magic item cannot apply a feat to a character sheet.

Yes. I've also tried clicking on the actual "cast" button next to the spell, but they don't light up.
Try removing the item and adding it back again.
Also, are you running any ad/popup blockers, browser extensions, or a VPN? One of those might be interfering with DDB.

even though the target site is dndbeyond, a link is transformed like this in the final text:
I've noticed that some official content has these kinds of 'normal' links which somehow persist if the content is used as template for homebrew.
The only way I know of is to use something that has one of those links that’ll persist.
