Nono, I just seem to be the only one who doesn’t like the idea of combining wins in multiple categories for overall championship moving forward. Everyone else seems to like the idea but me. So, instead of me holding things up, just discount my opinion on the subject. Doesn’t that solve your issue?
Your opinion matters, and not just as the winner/judge. You are one of the most, if not the most helpful and valued person in this community. What you think counts for much. Discounting your opinion is not an option.
If you believe that for your iteration of the competition, the categories should be your decision alone, that’s your decision. It may discontent some people, but it’s your competition, this time around. If you think that the winner of multiple categories should win, or if the person with the highest average or highest score should win, then it’s yours to choose.
That being said, considering how unfortunate Semako’s state of affairs have been, being cheesed by a 1 in the previous competition and almost winning this one, it may be the honorable thing to allow Semako some say in determining the categories.
You’re entitled to your decisions, good man. Just make sure you consider them closely and make the one that feels best to you.
Oh, you flatter me. But this is my first bout in the CotFB, the rest of you have been here longer than I have so my opinion shouldn’t weigh all that heavily in the face of everyone else’s combined opinion. I appreciate that my opinion matters, but one man’s opinion shouldn’t hold up progress. (We’re not congress. 😂) Since everyone else thinks they should stack, let ‘em stack. If we put it to a vote that would be the more popular opinion it seems.
I was unaware that Semako had been scooped by 1 pt last go ‘round, like I said, this is my first rodeo with y’all. They and I have been discussing the upcoming categories, we just have also not reached a consensus either as of yet. But I’m sure we will sooner or later. I really only have my heart set on one category and am open to considering any other reasonable ideas for the other two, so we’ll get there.
I appreciate the autonomy you are bestowing upon me, I hope I won’t let anyone down. I know it’s just a forum contest, but still, it should be fun for everyone too.
I suggest that we, as a community, create a discord server (or the like) where we can propose theme ideas and have a theme voting period in between competitions. We could have a bot that randomly selects themes that have been submitted and the winner (and judge) of the previous competition would have the power to replace one of the randomly chosen submitted themes with one they choose from the submissions.
Just a thought, it's late for me and I'm not too coherent right now, but it makes sense in my head lol
I'm going to throw my hand in and say that I agree with IAmSposta. Making multiple entries should be encouraged by virtue of being judged against different competitiors (referring to the entries, not the entrants). If you enter one race, you have one shot at a gold medal. If you enter 3 events, each of which are different, then you have a chance to win each of them, so 3 chances of winning gold.
So I'd prefer to say that the best single score out of all the entries should be the overall winner, being the entry that people liked the most and scored the highest. I also prefer the idea of the winner of each category picking the next category (and being kept from entering that one) because it leaves everyone open to enter the next competition in some capacity (unless they win all 3!), and offers a reward for winning each contest. It promotes entering multiple categories because you have multiple chances to win, but doesn't make entering multiple categories a necessity to have a chance at winning.
So I would say (summarised):
single highest score is the winner (on a tie, it's highest total score between the tied entrants 1-3 enries, so more entries can tip a tie)
winner of each category announces their next category theme in the competition thread, and cannot enter that category
overall winner makes the next competiton and announces the 3 categories.
everyone makes loads of cool homebrew and nobody is entirely excluded (unless they win all 3, in which case they probably need the break!)
The most important thing which drives me saying a single entry can win is the exclusion - in this case, Semako would be excluded from entering the 2 categores they pick themes for - meaning that they can only ever win on one category. if that entry is amazing and gets perfect scores, but someone else wins the other 2, I don't think that it would be fair to say the other person wins, because Semako couldn't have entered the other two. This would promote anyone competitive to skip every other competition so that they can enter all 3 categories for a maximum chance of winning 2. I think the single highest is still the best option!
And if you want to be really fair, in the event of a tie allow any entrant who is excluded from a category to count their winning entry in the previous competition in that category for the tie breaker, just to make sure no-one gets screwed over by being excluded!
-edit: Also, Sposta - stop belittling yourself! Your opinion matters. Don't make me get the squirt bottle.

I don’t discord. I hate discord, I can never get it to work because I refuse to download their app. 🤷♂️ I try to limit my exposures to data mining, you understand. (I don’t use DDBs app either.)
We could just have a COTB Suggestions thread where people can put up ideas. Anyone who's not sure what to pick for their categories (I know I was a bit ike "oh heck, now I need to make decisions!" could browse them, and it would likely offer people inspiration for their own homebrew regardless! Or we just let people spam the end of the last competition with ideas for it from when the voting starts, so that when a winner is declared they have a fw ideas to browse if they're unsure. I don't think an entire discord would be necessary really!

What if there were more than one judge? The winner of each category becomes a judge, and they collaborate on the themes. (In this case, IamSposta and Semako would co-judge (is that a word?).)
Also, a separate thread for theme suggestions would be good.

Here is my only issue with allowing multiple people to determine categories: What is the fun of being the judge? My opinion will differ from other previous judges, but for me the most fun part was getting to come up with the contest categories and see how everyone played into them differently. Heck, part of the reason I look forward to winning the competition again is because of a handful of category ideas I have come up with.
If we take away the unilateral power of the judge to make up the category themes, then what is the appeal to becoming the judge? Beyond that, you would be responsible for organizing the thread, continually keeping up to date with the entrants, creating and monitoring the votes, and making announcements. You do not get to participate in the competition, as you are in control of the votes.
Again, this is just my opinion, but the most fun part of being the judge is getting to have everyone play with your category ideas. If you take that away (or reduce it) then whoever is the judge is just stuck with doing all the bookkeeping for a competition they cannot even participate in, so there is no real appeal to taking up the mantle.

We could just have one person be judge indefinitely, rather than passing the responsibility around, but leave the categories in the hands of the winner. The judge should then be compensated by at least allowing them to compete. It is bittersweet to win and then be saddled with new responsibility.

I don’t think a loss of shared responsibility is in order, but a declaration of it. It must be stated that: if you decide to compete in these competitions, you accept the result of winning, the rules of submission and voting, the possibility of loss, and the feedback of any who might take time to read your submissions. Without group responsibility and participation (such as not giving the responsibility to create and operate threads for the competition to someone different than the last time), people can easily get burnout and this Competition will die out.

On my suggestion, each judge would only be restricted from entering their own competition category. So, for example, in this competition, IAmSposta won the Player Options so gets to pick the next category for that, and then Semako won the DM options and Inspirational, so gets to make the categories for that but not compete. IAmSposta won overall (highest singe score) so takes on making the next competition. Both of them can enter the others categories, just not their own - so nobody isn't allowed to enter the competition.
I see that making and maintaining the thread is not really a reward, but it's necessary to keep the competition alive. If people think it's best, then we could have each person who's category it is be responsible for setting up the vote for that category I don't see how the competition owner could influence the votes - the main concern is people making a category which perfectly fits a homebrew they've been working on for years, just so they can enter it in - that's the potential for abuse of power, not the actual votes!

With the Google Doc method we have, it is possible to remove votes. The benefit of this (and the reason we moved to it in the first place) is that you can delete any votes that are obviously disingenuous (aka troll votes). The downside to this is that it does leave room for the Judge to influence the final total. Although I doubt anyone invested in the competition would actually do that, if the judge was also participating in a game where they controlled the votes, the potential for abuse would be there.
That being said, if we wanted to move to individual winners for each category I like your suggestion of having each one make a separate poll for their category. This would allow the "judge" to also participate and remove some of the work from their end.
