I am working on a conversion of a race from the Talislanta D20 Edition to 5E. Is there a way to add this ability where it properly shows up on the record sheet? Is this even a valid option in 5E?
Ariane are immune to all mind-affecting spells and spell-like effects. Ariane characters are assumed to automatically succeed on any required saving throw vs. mind-affecting spells.
It's definitely an immunity but there doesn't seem to be an option for mind-affecting spells and SLEs in Beyond.
That's because there is no such thing as a "mind-affecting spell" or even "spell-like effects" in general in the 5th edition rules. You'd have to define what you mean by those terms and leave it up to the players to apply the rule manually.
Also, flat-out immunity to magic that could alter your mind in any way is way stronger than typical racial traits in my opinion.
It is part of the race from the original rules that was carried over to D20 so I was working out how that would be done in 5E. The D20 book is found at talislantaDOTcom (it's a legal and free download at the site) if you want to see what I'm working with. I actually have the original book but the PDF has the errata fixes. lol
Another question is if 5E has any rules on weapons intended to do subdual damage? It does address the option to not kill if you reduce HP to 0, but how would you write up weapons designed specifically for that purpose? Just state it in the description?
For the Ariane, they use smooth stone maces and blunt, stone-tipped arrowheads in a manner to not kill. Though they do fight to protect their lives and land--"...in extreme cases, Ariane reserve the right to kill; the Ariane prefer to think of this as just another way of hastening the natural process of reincarnation."
Languages: Common, Primordial (either that or Elf or Deep Speech as it says they know elder tongue it could be either depending on the setting) +1 other
Mind shield: The character is very hard to sway, You have advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against enchantment magic (this makes it a little bit better than the elf fey ancestry ability and a little bit worse than the gnome Cunning ability).
Commune With Nature: functions a per the Firbolg ability Speech of Beast and Leaf:
Code of Conduct, all Ariane are bound a code, these mirror one of the Paladin Oaths (in which case if they become become a paladin they must take that oaths abilities).

In my opinion the best "idiomatic" approximation in 5th edition is immunity to being charmed. In fact, several mind-affecting spells and special abilities like Suggestion make an exception for creatures immune to being charmed even though the ability doesn't inflict the condition. So, the racial trait would read something like "You are immune to being charmed by spells and other magical effects." Compare to the elf race's Fey Ancestry trait.

The option to knock a creature unconscious with a melee attack obsoleted the need for specific weapons that deal nonlethal damage. The concept simply doesn't exist any more. I would just use the closest 5e approximation for that weapon, and only add a new weapon type if it adds something truly unique to the game. Adding a new weapon type means you have to figure out who should have proficiency in it and how it interacts with pre-existing feats, magic items and class features.
In your case, I'd just leave that story text in the Ariane race description without adding any extra rules. You could add special rules for their arrows, but slings also inflict blunt trauma and don't have any special ability to knock creatures out.

Wow thats a lot of info in that system.....anyway...having a look I'd do the following:
Appearance: humans with onyx black skin and white/grey hair (drow version of human)
Size: Medium, Height: 5’8”-6’2”, Weight: 100-180 lbs, Speed: 30ft
Ability score bonuses: +1 Int, +2 Wis
Languages: Common, Primordial (either that or Elf or Deep Speech as it says they know elder tongue it could be either depending on the setting) +1 other
Mind shield: The character is very hard to sway, You have advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against enchantment magic (this makes it a little bit better than the elf fey ancestry ability and a little bit worse than the gnome Cunning ability).
