It struck me this morning that, if we can have half orcs and half elves, why can't we have hybrids between other races?
The most natural of theses, I feel, would be a cross between a gnome and a halfling. But, with so much magic about, practically any cross could be conceivable. So I worked out a simple means of home-brewing such characters.
First off, this would be done on a case by case basis for each character created. Each time a hybrid character is created the process is done from scratch. Two players going for the same cross of races would each have to roll and take their chances with the results.
Next, all you have to do is list all the racial characteristics for both parents, matching them up side by side. If one parent has an ability that can't reasonably be matched against anything else, list it versus "n/a."
For each characteristic roll a d12. On a 1-5 take the characteristic of one parent, on a 6-10 take that of the other. On a roll of an 11 take neither. On a roll of 12, take both.
It's such a simple idea, I'm surprised I haven't seen anything like it before. Perhaps it has and I am ignorant of the prior manifestations. If that's so, I apologize for wasting your time.
Regardless, I hope this sparks a lively yet civil conversation.
Yes to mix and match, but I wouldn't roll for it. Just decide with the player which traits from each to take. I don't like the On a roll of an 11 take neither. On a roll of 12, take both.
Well there will always be the two philosophies of character creation; conscious choice versus play the hand you're dealt. I'm clearly one of the latter, but I recognize it as a preference, not as a "one twue way." I chose a d12 to give the player a chance to have "hybrid vigor." Others may decide to shift the odds up or down with alternative dice.
