I read the tutorial on here, and it was very useful but i have run in to a problem. I want to make an item that can, once a per long rest, cast a spell. I can't seem to program that in there.
For example: I want an ironwood dulcimer that has a charge of Earth Tremor, cast at level 2. When I add a spell it seems like only casters can use it and also it is either "at will" or has a limited number of charges that doesn't reset.
In the homebrew generator for your item, follow these steps:
Under “Basic Information” make sure that if there is Required Attunement, make sure that the “Attunement Description” is blank so that any character can use the device. Or at least make sure it says it is Attunable by anyone who can play a dulcimer.
Under “Additional Information” check the box that says “Has Charges” under “Number of Charges” put “1,” under “Charge Reset Condition” put “Dawn” (most magic items use “dawn” most feats or class features use “long rest”) under “Charge Reset Description” put “This Magic dulcimer regains it’s charge each day daily at dawn.” SAVE!!!!
Scroll down until you see “spells,” click the plus sign and then click “Add Spell.” Put the name of the spell you want the item to cast in the “Spell Name” field, in this case “Earth Tremor,” For “Min - Max Spell Charges” put “1” in both fields, for “Cast at Spell Level” put “2.” SAVE!!!!
Go to the Character sheet, refresh the page and check to see if it worked. That should have done it.

So I went through the process and at first I tried "Long Rest" but that didn't. Then I changed it all to "dawn" and the only way I can see to reset the charges is to go in to the item and uncheck "charges." Which is how it works when I had "Long rest" too.
The character sheet has absolutely no idea when “Dawn” is in your game, there is no clock or anything that the DM can adjust. At least not yet anyway. For now we have to be responsible for maintaining our own stuff as players. It is worth doing that programming though because at some point in the future the system might eventually do that stuff for us.
Plus, some magic items “regain XdX charges daily at dawn, and the system currently has no way to know what you might have rolled, so it has no idea how many charges to restore. With the encounter builder, the combat tracker, and the upcoming dice roller it may soon be possible.
Also, the revamps to the homebrew creator and Character sheet that they are working on (to make the site compliant with the capabilities for the Class Feature Variants that WotC has in playtesting), might make it happen sooner. 🤞

Thanks! You think there would at least be a a way to make it work on long/short rests though, huh?
Well, I can't wait for updates! Hopefully they'll add a section for animal companions too. Haha.
Most Feats and Class features including Spell Slots reset automatically because they are a fixed amount tied to the character themselves. Magic items are separate enchanted things, with potentially random recharges, and tied to a thing they cannot track: the individual pace of “the sun” for every game session. You know yourself that some sessions run for four hours and cover 2 minutes of combat, and other sessions last two hours and three days go by. On top of that there are thousands of campaigns running with different times all across the site. If they add date/time tracking in campaigns one day.... 🤷♂️
There is a section for animal companions though, look on your character sheet under “Extras.” Covers companions, mounts, familiars, steel defenders, homunculi, all kinds of stuff.
Carrying on on this topic 2 years later, Is there a way to put a box on a Homebrew subclass? I mean like how a paladin has boxes for use of channel divinity and such in official subclasses.

Is there a way to do this for a homebrew race? like innate spells. Like Polymorph for example.
I think best you can do right now is create a homebrew item to track this.Creating the item is pretty straight-forward using the instructions above, adding charges can be done from the "additional information" section.
The only caveat is that DDB still haven't coded the ability for those charges to reset when you take a long rest, despite adding the option to specify when the charges reset, so frustrating.

Am I doing something wrong here?
