Magic Stone is the 2nd best cantrip in the game (after Eldritch Blast) up until Level 4. But it does not have the cantrip scale, so once you hit level 4, it becomes a bad cantrip. And there are no rules for switching cantrips.
So, here is my house ruled Magic Stone upgrade Add the following paragraph:
Once you hit 5th level, the first pebble you touched's damage becomes 2d6+your spellcasting ability modifier. At 11th level, the first does 3d6+spellcasting modifier, and at 17th level the first does 4d6+ spellcasting modifier. In all cases, the first pebble also changes color, becoming yellow, while the 2nd and 3rd pebble (if any) remains at 1d6 plus ability modifier.
Unless you are multi-classing into a class that attacks more than once, you can only throw one stone per round.
Additional stones turns it from an attack cantrip to a support cantrip, as you are handing them out to people to throw rather than throwing them yourself 1/round
I think up to 2 boosts of 1d6 damage scaled based on player level is fine. Probably 2d6 plus modifier at 10th level and 3d6 modifier at 18th level for the first stone. Rate of scaling should be behind other scaling cantrips b/c Magic Stone affects multiple stones which can be saved up. That's the benefit of Magic Stone over other cantrips.
Maybe at a rider that the special first stone bonus only lasts for 1 minute to further limit potential for abuse.

I allow additional stones so I don’t have to adjust the damage like that.
