While helping another DM on Discord come up with a homebrew feat he was brainstorming, I had an idea based on the black dragon mask magic item. Can you help me break this or come up with unexpected consequences for this feat?
If you have a spell that requires rest to recharge, it gains a recharge of 6. Casting the spell consumes a spell slot of the appropriate level.
Also, if the PC has several of those (like a Tiefling Aberrant Dragonmark and Magic Initiate) it would start to become a lot to keep track of and if they went Fighter they wouldn’t be able to cast any of them.
Ah yeah I see the problem there. This feat along with Mystic Arcanum might mean a warlock with four spell slots could cast four level nine spells per short rest. That's a problem. A tweak to the wording is in order to make it more clear that you need a slot of the appropriate level to cast the spell.
If you have a spell that requires rest to recharge, it gains a recharge of 6. Casting the spell uses an available spell slot of the spell's level.
Warlocks don't get spell slots above level 5, so that should handle that situation. The second point I think is just a matter of housekeeping. You're still limited by the number of spell slots you have available so things shouldn't get too out of hand. If it's too much to keep track of, then it's probably not a good feat for that player.

If that player has several spells and uses them and has to roll recharge for 3-5 spells every round and remember which ones recharged and which ones didn’t.... Mistakes will get made. I thought of using recharge for a homebrew Psionicist and it went sideways real fast. It’s not the spell slots, it’s the recharge mechanic on more than one thing. Even for something as simple as a Dragonborn’s breath weapon it could be a pain to track.

"Not all those who wander are lost"
First issue that came to mind is Mystic Arcanum.
