I’m about to start a homebrew campaign where part of the story is that the PCs get somebody’s soul/memories accidentally implanted in them. As they progress I’d like them to discover more about the person who’s memories they now have an gain levels in that persons class (basically free levels of multiclass).
I am thinking these other people were level 3 but I don’t want to limit the PCs’ main class by doing so in case we play long enough to level to 20. I know that’s WAY down the road but I’m wondering if there’s a way to pull this off in DnD Beyond?
I know I can homebrew a subclass and just give them the feats but what I don’t know how to do - or if it’s even possible - is to progress spell casting level accordingly.
The best way would be to recreate the action and modifier given by the subclass of their memory self with feat, and give those feat to player, potentially 3 feat per player for each level in this other class
Yeah I knew I could add their class feats. The only thing I couldn’t figure out was how to add additional spell slots if their main class was a spell caster.
I explored this a little bit. I multiclassed past 20. I just created each class's features at a particular level as a feat. I took a Bard 14/Rogue 6 up to a Bard 20/Rogue 10 with 10 additional feats duplicating the additional levels. I had to add CON to the HP rolls manually after 20.
Using rules from whichever Epic Levels I had open at the time from dmsguild, I would save the PDF and edit to add additional spell slots at the higher levels. As far as I am aware this isn't something you can add to dndbeyond.
Some things can't be changed when going over level 20. Or at the very least your homebrew feat's text will need to supersede earlier text and derived values. For example, in my example above, the Bard 15 feat would simply say:
Your Bardic Inspiration die changes to a a d12 at 15th level. You gain an 8th level spell slot. You can learn 1 additional Bard spell.
You can use the feat to add the Bard spell but you have to keep track of your spell slot(s). It doesn't change the exported PDF's Bardic Inspiration section and I think it doesn't update the original feature snippet on the FEATURES & TRAITS tab. I don't have a Bard currently so I'm going from memory. Even if Bardic Inspiration doesn't have a derived number, some other feature will.
But the text of the feat puts it there and I imagine a player saying "Level 21 gave me that d12 inspiration! Enjoy sluts"
